Does history repeat itself?

In 1980, Jimmy Carter was leading Ronald Reagan in the mainstream media polls by 9% in October. Then after the debates, Reagan proceeded to win 44 states in a landslide election against the big government, tax, spend and regulate liberal Jimmy Carter who was also weak in dealing with Muslim terrorists.

Carter was simply outclassed by a superior debator. There's no parallel with what happened tonight. HH

I was told by my history teacher, that unless I studied harder, I would repeat history.

Have to disagree with you about this. There's a perfect parallel with the way Reagan smoked Carter in 1980 and the way Romney smoked Obama tonight.

The first debate is always the most important, and I suspect Obama will fare even worse in the next two than he did tonight.

It will in this country since the Obama voters don't know their early twentieth century European history, especially that of Russia and the Communist revolution. They don't know who Karl Marx was or what Communism is and what it's done to the world.

If they did, they wouldn't vote for that twit. But they don't so yes, history does (and will) repeat itself.

Yes history repeats itself because people just get stupid and lazy right before they hit the wall at 500mph! You can't change history by not teaching it! I see it everyday with these new texbooks that are crap! Kids are brainwashed everyday by the trivial media and technology and it's all about them!

Humans haven't really changed throughout recorded history. Technology has, but humans themselves haven't. Stop the flow of electricity and we will be no different than we were 500 or even 5,000 years ago. What seems like history repeating itself is simply humans being human over and over again.

So I guess the answer to the OP's question is answered. History DOES repeat itself. Same as those who don't learn from history (or use the search) do repeat it.

And the mainstream media was skewing the polls just as hard then as they are now. Carter really was a bumbling idiot and the debates just exposed his stupidity to a wider audience. I don't think Obama is as stupid as Carter but he's handicapped by an inability to express his true intentions and get reelected at the same time.

Not going to address the politics/debates side of this, but the question of history repeating itself....the best quote I heard and I love is this:

"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme."

Attributed to Mark Twain, but I'm not sure if that's accurate. One thing he DID say that is solidly attributed:

"It is not worth while to try to keep history from repeating itself, for man's character will always make the preventing of the repetitions impossible."

Without discussing the validity of the facts spewed between the two, Romney seemed to be in control from point one. King Obama was on his hills the entire time.

No with that said, this is one debate. If Axelrod is anything like what people say, he won't let KO make the same mistake twice. However, the variable is can KO deliver? Without a teleprompter, not sure he can formulate cognizant phrases. Axelrod has already requested the media on Air Force One to help in telling the story, their story.

Let's see what the next debate delivers. I'm sure both won't settle on their recent success/failures.

Romney = 1
King Obama = 0

History may not repeat, but humans do.

This election should be 'landslideable', though I doubt the voters at times.
