Driving from FL to PA -- what about MA?
Greetings.
Planning trip from Florida to Pennsylvannia, driving mostly on I-95. My FL CCW is good in all states but MA.
What do I need to do to go thru MA? Other than as fast/safely as possible and not stop?
Would unloading and locking my handgun in a lockable box in trunk be sufficient?
Thanks for any advise
Joe

Out of curiosity, does MD consider rounds in the mag as being loaded?

It's still illegal just so you know, I do believe, just have a better chance of getting a pass if caught

Where in PA are you going? I-95 is about the worst way to get there.

That's a good point. It's almost better to go through CLT and take 81 up into the center of the state. Even if you are going to Eastern PA it'd probably be less of a hassle than I95.

I95, to I26, to I77, to I81, to I80 east
If you destination is PA your legal to carry your guns unloaded in a locked box in your trunk per Federal transport regulations. As long as you don't stop except for gas & food in MD.

You wrote that you are going from FL to PA. Well MA is way out of your way. It shouldn't matter.

Stop in va, gas up, have a bite to eat, put unloaded gun in case, unload mags, drive through md without spending a penny, load up when you are back in a free state.

The loaded mag issue from what I recall is a hunting regulation occasionally missused.

Let me second VA Fish's recommendation; there are a lot of accomodating establishments in Northern Virginia where you can prepare yourself for your dash across Comrade O'Malley's Socialist Workers Paradise. Even if you are a fan of "The Wire", the Baltimore Ravens and the Baltimore Orioles (How 'bout dem Os Hon!), do not deviate, drive the speed limit and get north of the Mason Dixon line with your cargo as quickly as possible.
Coming back south repeat the above, get south of the high water line on the southern bank of the Potomac and then relax and enjoy Virgina hospitality again.

Here is the hunting regulation that some say applies, although some google searches say it has not been used on people for just loaded magazines in the car.
Quote:
|
(1) A person may not shoot at any species of wildlife from an automobile or other vehicle or, except as provided in § 4-203(b) of the Criminal Law Article and Title 5, Subtitle 3 of the Public Safety Article, possess in or on an automobile or other vehicle a loaded handgun or shotgun, or a rifle containing any ammunition in the magazine or chamber.

When I go up 81 my track through MD is very short; therefore, I unload and have my wife put it in the cooler until we cross over in to PA.

Skip 95 and take I-81. We drive from NY to FL every year and I have found the trip to be more relaxing, more scenic and have less traffic. You just need to watch the weather if the trip is in the winter since your more likely to get snow and ice along 81.
