Steel cases in 1911
I have owned my 1911 for about 3 years now, and probably 90 percent of the ammo I put through it was steel cased Wolf or Tula ammo.
I have seen several sources state that in WWII, most ammunition was made with steel cases due to the shortage of copper (and brass). My 1911 is a RIA, and while it is not percieved as high quality as most other 1911s, it has performed flawlessly with this ammo. No jams whatsoever.
Most people claim that "comblock" weapons were designed with steel cased ammunition in mind, but I was wondering if anyone has ever thought the same for the 1911.
I am a HUGE Glock fan, and nothing will ever replace my 19. However, I have no concerns putting steel cased ammo through my 1911. This thing is built solid, and will last longer than I do if I take care of it.
So what is everones opinion about steel cases through 1911s?

My Springfield GI has eaten alot of Tula with very few issues.

Steel cases no problem in my Springfield Armory M1911A1s.

Steel cases usually aren't a big problem in handguns. In high pressure rifle cartridges, the steel expands but doesn't spring back or contract as much as brass and can cause higher resistance to extraction.

that's pretty much all I shot in my Taurus PT1911AR and never had an issue with it. Ran great.

How many rounds? 3 yrs shooting a box a year is pretty low round count. I won't routinely shoot cheap steel ammo in any of my guns, but then I don't own a crap AK or Hipoint. The ammo works, but no one is going to convince me soft steel is good for the chamber or extractor & I have yet to see anyone torture test a pair of guns to find out. I am willing to buy the guns if someone is willing to buy the ammo??????

A few years ago I ran over 3000 rounds of the the old Wolf Poly through a NIB S&W 1911 Sc before without cleaning the pistol failed. I posted the results and pics here on GT.
.....not do to the ammo but rather poorly fitted cheap parts.

The steel cased .45s worked good enough in GI 1911A1s in WWII and Korea.

I'd say around 1500-2000 rounds of Wolf in the year I owned it. Never hand any issues with the pistol. Even buying steel cased gets expensive after a bit lol

I used to run a bunch of steel cased through my Springfield Custom Carry.
Never any problems.
I had a couple of TULA cases that didn't have an extractor groove. I saw them when I was loading the mags, tossed 'em.

Tula 230 gr. .45 ACP FMJ is all I use in my RIA 1911 and SA-GI 1911-A1 and my S&W 625-2. It is in every way fully equal and comparable with any similar domestic product.

Additionally, some coatings are just not that good for some cases.

And also,
I wonder if ammo makers have considered making soft-steel-jackets bullets for handguns? Would there be still too much barrel erosion with soft-steel bullets?

That is a legal issue with AP legislation.

Now that I am back a real computer I can go into a little more detail.
From Rec Guns.
(i) a projectile or projectile core which may be used in a handgun and
which is constructed entirely (excluding the presence of traces of other
substances) from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass,
bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium; or
The way I read it, someone could make a soft jacket of one of the above substances with a lead core and not violate the law, BUT
1. They would have to change their manufacturing processes. (More money to setup a new process.)
2. They may have issues with the press or with the gov. if someone shoot someone in a vest....
A few years ago a company was making a zippy little 115gr 9mm round with a thick hard copper jacket. It was capable of penetrating a vest at close range. The Gov found out and stopped the sale of the product. It cost the company millions to retool even though their product was legal, it wasn't legal.

I just shot 50 thru m SA M1911A1 - no probelms. Decent accuracy.
