Bushi-do ThaiGrr is sixteen years old today!

Here's Bushi on his 16th birthday with his young companions, Sushi and Kobe (they are 11 month old kittens). He's getting extra special treatment today.

Here's Bushi a few years ago with his pet mice....

(Yep, that's three blind mice.)

Beautiful cat.

I have always wondered about that. Is it torture for the mice or the cat having them like that? Or does the cat stop paying attention to those mice? Or all mice?

One more question, did the mice ever try to take over the world?

Thanks, Bushi has been a great cat. We like Siamese because they are beautiful, graceful, smart and talkative. The kittens will even play fetch.

We kept pet mice for several years for our indoor cats. The cats were constantly entertained by them. The white mice are albinos with pink eyes, so they see very poorly or not at all. They never responded to the cats in any way, completely oblivious and so not stressed at all. They functioned well by sound and smell. Most were comfortable with our handling them.

We did get one brown mouse. He could see us and the cats. He was more aware, more fearful, more aggressive and more likely to bite. We gave him small boxes for shelters and hides. In time he became used to activity outside and more secure in the terrarium. If someone were to get mice for their cats, I suggest getting white mice only.

Mice live about a year. It was sad when they died because they became pets to us, too. Even though they are simple creatures, each had it's own personality traits just as any other pet. That, and the weekly complete cage clean and refresh chore became more than we wanted to handle. But, if you take good care of the mice I think it's a great way to keep indoor cats active.

I built a rigid but ventilated plexiglas top for the aquarium/terrarium that the cats could get on top to watch, hear and smell the mice. They loved it.
