Bought a Mossberg 500!
Less than two months after buying my first firearm (my Gen4 G22) I had the itch for another gun. So I went with a Mossberg 500 since I wanted something better to defend my home (apartment... w/e) than just the handgun. Took possession a week ago, but just got to shoot it today. Shot 25 rounds of #8 birdshot and 15 rounds of 00buck. I ordered 50 rounds of low-recoil Winchester 00buck from sgammo.com but didn't have it in time to shoot today.
All I can say is... WOW! SO much fun. If my buddy hadn't been short on time, I would've put twice as many shells through the gun. It has kick, that's for sure. The 00buck kicked more than the birdshot, but the felt recoil wasn't so awful. So I feel confident that the low-recoil will satisfy me once I get to put a couple dozen rounds of it downrange. My shoulder is sore, and a little red, but I'm not "beat up" by any means.
My plans for the gun include a light, a shorter LOP stock (probably the Hogue) and a side-saddle shell holder. Yeah, kinda tac-tool but that's why I bought the bare-bones basic model of 500. It is specifically the 50411. It came with a pistol grip but I have no desire to install it.
Anyways. Pic time. Firearms were safety-checked beforehand; there's an empty magazine in the G22

May I sugest this one. If you ever get another.

I just got one and they are sweet. The barrel is ported for lower rise and recoil, and it's back bored and choked. Vang modifies shotguns for the DEA.

Nothing wrong with the Vang ob if you want to be able to increase performance with "standard loads" it does that very well, but with the new loads the standard barrel works fine.

I love Mossberg 500's also.
Great price, non spring loaded load gate, tang safety, and easy to reach slide release.
Now you need a rifle to complete your total home defense setup.
Here's my home defense / SHTF collection...

You and I have recently buried the hatchet so I will be cordial.
There is a huge difference between opinion and experience. An opinion based on second hand knowledge and having shot both basic the 500 and the modified one are two different experiences.
You are wrong. But we can still be civil, yes?

Oh certainly. I am just saying that I get paper plate sized patterns at 20-25 yards with the new dedicated ammo and that is all I expect, past that it's a slug gun. Just makes the best out of the training I have, relatively inexpensively

I prefer Vienna Sausage to SPAM but that's just me...
Yeah, I want an AR eventually, they're just so damn expensive. May buy a .22 just for fun as my next gun. I feel pretty safe here in the apartments between the shotgun and the Glock. But an AR is on my "to get" list...

Nice. I just picked up a 500 to go with my 870 this weekend. I have an Elzetta light mount, a surefire 6Px, and a Hogue 12" LOP (this shotgun is for my gf) on the way. All of which are great additions to a home defense shotgun.

very nice OP. Not sure if you're a bigger framed guy, if so, try to original LOP the gun came with and see if it ends up suiting you in the longrun. I'm 6'3 so it's amazing for me.

Put 40 shells through the gun last Friday. 25 of #8 birdshot and 15 of 00buck. WOW. So much fun! Can't wait to go back tomorrow and shoot some more.
I'm 5'9" and have average length arms. Its not a stretch to shoot it with the standard stock, but my arm is pretty far outstretched. When my funds recover I am strongly considering the Hogue stock. Gonna shoot it a bunch more before I make that final decision, though.
Also got in a box of Winchester Ranger low-recoil 00buck that I wanna try out. I can handle the full-power 00buck fine, but it was only like $33 + shipping from sgammo.com so I figured I"d give it a try to see how it compares to the full-power Winchester

My favorite shotgun that I've owned was my M500 that is like the OP's, except the stocks were wood, since it was purchased in 1987. I'd say that your gun is perfect for HD as it is. If anything, add a more visible front sight, and perhaps an ammo carrier.

I recently put a 18.5 in barrel with bead sight on my 500 & I like it better than my 590A1. It is shorter and lighter. Great 00 buck patterns at 25 yds, bigger spread but still lethal at 50 and accurate with slugs out to 100 yards.
