Stay on the line. Have technology to keep the communication as hands-free as possible. Don't get bogged down with dialogue with the dispatcher -- you have to stay alert and focused on the situation you're dealling with -- but keep the dispatcher informed of any changes on your end, such as sounds that indicate the intruders are leaving, etc. Ask the dispatcher to update you when officers arrive: you want to know if that's a cop you hear at the back door, or the home invader's accomplice.
It goes without saying, don't utter anything that sounds like macho blather. Let common sense be your guide.
