1988 NJSP academy issue: H&K P7M8 (I still remember the serial number). Carried the P7M8 for 12 years.
Then we switched to the wretched (at the time) S&W 99. Carried that for about six months, maybe a little less. The first one I was issued didn't work. The second one was okay, had tool marks on the feed ramp, but at least worked. Then we sent the Smiths back to Smith & Wesson.
The replacement for the SW99 was the Sig P228, which we still carry today. At the time our Superintendent was a retired FBI agent. Since the Smiths didn't work it was almost a given that we transitioned to the Sig. I think given the choice most troops would have rather stayed with the P7M8.
