My EDC "when in town." M1911 45acp.
Nothing but 230gr. In a JHP. WW PDX1, GD's bonded, XTP's.
Yes I like 230gr FMJ as well.

My HD round of choice is a .45 ACP 230 gr. FMJ in a RIA 1911. It feeds, fires and ejects impeccably. POA is POI at 25 yds. Over penetration is not a concern as our house is about 150 yds. away from the next nearest neighbor. If I want to run JHP's I'll use a S&W 625-2 w/ Gold Dots, etc. But in all reality, I just don't think it will matter a great deal. A 230 gr. .45 bullet in the center of mass is going to rapidly lower the BP of a criminal. And once their BP goes through the floor, they will calm down very quickly.

COnsider the very small hole even a 45 FMJ makes, you really are handicapping yourself using ball ammo when just about any JHP woul dbe better. The hole will be bigger & the BG BP will drop faster, both good things.

Perhaps you could use a JHP that would feed, fire, and eject impeccably if you went with a more reliable pistol?
I'll wager that a good 9mm JHP will perform better than .45 FMJ while holding more rounds, costing less, and being easier to shoot faster.

I'll second that. I think Mas knows a thing or two about these things.

I always tended to use 230 grain loads in my .45s, both CZ and Glock-then Dan Wesson.
Most of the posts on .45s will show the guys going with 230s, esp. Gold Dots.

The newer designs like the FTX, HST and Tac-XP get some attention, but the FTX
is unproven and so is the Barnes X bullet as loaded by DT and others as the
TAC-XP, and DPX. I've never seen any HST, but know the Golden Sabers
are also a viable choice.
Just so little of a data base on them when the Gold Dots have a score of stopping
power results, which gives them a good reputation for the streets.
If I was to buy another .45 ACP I'd probably make it a Glock 36 as I really liked
how they felt and how slim and light it was. A Glock 30 SF or Gen 4 might get
the nod as well.
(I'm just in love with the .357 SIG- and am saving for a G33 at the moment.)
230 FMJ for practice and the 230 gr. Gold Dot, or DT 230 for carry.

Just load and forget, really.
Even if it doesn't expand, it's still .45 caliber!

Best of luck with finding a suitable load.

One advantage of standard 230 gr ammo is being able to train with 230 gr ball. FWIW

Place your shot & use a premium JHP and it really doesn't matter what gr.
I did a lot of gel testing with differen 45ACP/Super loads and for the most part until you start pushing hard into the super land, it doesn't really matter.
Find a premium JHP that you shoot well and test it with YOUR gun, and be happy.
As for me, I have a small pile of 185gr, 200gr, 230gr JHP bullets from Corbon, Federal and Winchester. ( I think I used up the Rem.) I use the 230gr+p mostly because it is quieter with the suppressor, but wouldn't feel under gunned with any of the above.
PS> For those that want ball ammo. It has great pen, but the JHP does more damage along the way. Given my option, I will go with the JHP. If I didn't have an option, I would want a flat point.
