Prayers sent.
I don't blame her one bit for not being armed off duty. I very rarely ever carry off duty. My duty belt is uncomfortable enough 5 days a week. Sure aren't going to have anything unnecessary strapped on my waist the other 2.
ETA: Though in Houston, I would probably have to just suck it up and be armed. That's a craphole of a city.

Wow... sad really. So many people *fight* for the right to carry. You *can* and really should, but you don't.
I've been in law enforcement for 30 years, and not a day goes by that I take my "job given" right for granted, and not a day goes by that I don't carry when I leave the house.

Why wasn't it inside the hotel room!?!??!?
Now, a gun I bought and sold is in the hands of a felon on the streets of Orlando.
Why do people/cops leave guns in cars at night!?!?!??!?!
|
BECAUSE THEY ARE IDIOTS!!!!!!
If you are going to bother to take a o/d piece in vacation, carry the dang thing!!! Steps off soap box. I worked for a guy who left his duty belt with his service revolver in the rear area of his hatch back, and had all manner of PD stickers on his car and parked his car in the hood. Why there? He had to go to court and he's rather walk a few blocks than pay for parking. Sure as shinola he came back and the car was ransacked and not only was his revolver gone but so was his vest. He could not understand why I told him he was a moron.

I'm not sure how or why a young, female police officer frequents these types of establishments off duty without a firearm. As others have noted this is a tough lesson learned.

I've worked with a "few" who had the same mindset. They would actually say, "I can't get involved or get in trouble if I don't carry when I'm off duty". You can't defend yourself or your family if your not armed either. If you'd rather be "lucky" than "prepared", go right ahead. I hope Officer Smith changes her mind about her personal safety....

I'm still trying to figure out why HPD released the whole video, including a clear face shot of their own officer.
I've worked with HPD, especially their Robbery Detail, so I know they've got some really good guys there. I trust them, but I don't know if I would have released that much to the media.
That's just me thinking out loud...

I work outside of a city that has an officer who had their duty weapon and belt stolen after leaving them in a parked car not once, but twice.

Of course, I ride a scooter too so maybe it makes sense.

Shame on me for missing that little detail the first time I watched the video. German weapons from WWI & WWII are my specialty lol!

It really sux that police deal with these characters all day long and then go unarmed when the thugs are still out there.
Please carry to protect yourselves, if nothing else. You can!

I could just imagine the not so flattering nicknames her co-workers have created for her. As well as all the wise-ass remarks/off color jokes.

The saying "I wouldn't want to be caught dead in a place like that" came from somewhere...

It better to be shot coming from somewhere else?
Being a dead stiff sucks no matter where you get nailed in the end.
