Here's a Big5 $79 1937 Tula PE ex-sniper refurb.
The plugs and the ground welds can be seen on the receiver.

Very nice. Some day I'm gonna get some vintage rifles. The spousal unit is not ready yet.

Thanks!
Don't wait too long, surplus weapons are drying up and going up in price.

They make new mounts for PEs and repro PE scopes if you want to put that old girl back in service. How does she shoot? You've definately got a nice collection there.

They are both nice rifles. I started out my milsurp collection with a 91/30 , then a M39 Finn , then came a enfield and K31. if you end up liking the mosin you should try out a M39 diffrent sights , thicker barrel, better trigger , and a pistol grip stock. Really the pinnicale of the mosin rifle

I'm thinking about re-snipering the PE, but I've read about how tough it is to deal with the plugs. The snipers have a better trigger than the regular infantry rifles even after going through refurb and they shoot great!! and thanks!

That first Mosin sniper is a fine looking example of a rifle. I still can't see how people say Mosins are ugly when I look at that.

You would probably want to drill the screws out as close to the original threads as possible without actually touching them, then I'd probably try and use something to fold the metal into the center and try to remove it. Another method would be to try and redrill and retap the original holes. Or you could try and cut a slot for a screw driver bit, nice and deep. Whatever you decide good luck with it.

If you can still see the plugs, the best way would be to center-punch them, then drill through the plugs using incrementally larger bits until just smaller than the threaded holes. Then just re-tap to the original thread. It'll take a while and you'd have to rig up a fixture of some sort, but the holes should end up right where they're supposed to be.

Every C&R collector should have a Mosin-Nagant, if for no other reason than to have an example of the worst handling, most crudely made, general issue bolt gun of the era aside from bitter end of the war Axis rifles.

I'd argue the Steyr-Mannlicher M1895 was the worst rifle out of all of them

I'd say the Carcano sucks hard too, though there are really good individual examples of it. However, the Mosin sucks harder generally because it is so difficult to find an excellent one amongst all of the ones that are little more than inaccurate noisemakers.

Thanks, guys.
The scope and mount came with the rifle.
As for the guy who doesn't like, mosins, don't buy them -leave them for the people who actually appreciate them. That's all I have to say...

My father use to say he didn't buy it that Oswald Assasination theory not because of the "magic bullet" or all of the evidence the history channel put out but because he owned the 91/41 Carcano for years and never could shoot a good group out of it at that speed. Surprisingly he did hunt deer with it and it did pretty well but I'd imagine the distance was closer.

The Oswald shot wasn't all that far, it was the moving of the target that made it difficult. He didn't group anything.

The only way to appreciate a Mosin is to get one the Finns essentially rebuilt with some pride and craftsmanship.
