"Mitt Romney has gone on record with the crackpot idea that the Russians are America’s “number one geopolitical foe.”

Islamic Terrorists are number one and Russia is number two.
China is number three and the Libertarian Party is number four.

But it does change from day to day, so Romney just might be right.

While I think Islamic Terrorist and the countries that support them do come first, the Russians are still a solid 2nd.

People seem to forget about the who invading Georgia thing, and the whole threaten to start a war over missile defense. Also lets not forget the multiple assassination and attempted assassinations of pro-American leaders in the old soviet bloc countries. Then there the occasional Cyber attack and spying, even though the Chinese get more press. Then their is the supplying the Iranians and Syrians with weapons thing. Also that whole sticking Russian special forces and Military in Iraq literally just days before we invaded. Seems Putin still thinks there is a cold war going on.

I'm glad to hear Mitt is thinking that way about Russia and is not doing the "ohh please be our friend" thing that Obama is doing.

Aside from the cyber attacks, which is no different than what our government does to them every day, how are any of the items you listed supposed top be America's problem? Why can't Europe deal with their own problems, so we can deal with ours?

There is a huge difference, if you are on our side instead of theirs. But you aren't.

I'm surprised he could count to four. We ought to let it go at that.

Regardless of how bad the Russians are, I can still say this for them: At least they don't steal half my income each year and sell my unborn children into debt slavery to buy votes in the here and now.

I thought you loved the Constitution. Why do you refer to the 16th amendment as theft?

I'm betting you could relocate to Russia. Can't figure out why you don't since you would have it better there.

Bad ideas are amended throughout history. That doesn't repudiate the document as a whole.

I bet you could reach that realization without much trouble but it wouldn't make for much drama.

The number one threat to America is china. Period. Everyone else is just a sideshow. Sooner or later, we're going to have to deal with them. It's coming. The second great threat to America is domestic... specifically the domination at the fed. level of corporate interest whose allegiance is not to America.

Number one? Why all the bickering and jockeying for position.

The number one threat is the one that hits us next. Number two will be the one right after that.

The world is full of threats, ranking them makes sense, arguing which one is number one and number three is a little silly.

WE DID NOT SUPPORT THE TALIBAN

The CIA and the US supported the factios which later merged into the Northern Alliance. Other elements were in the Fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan. Some were supported by the US and wanted a democratic Afghanistan, while others like the Taliban were supported by Islamic countries like Iran and Saudia Arabia and jihadist. That side wanted nothing to do with a democratic, Westernized Afghanistan. For the record, there were some like Gulbuddin Hekmatyar who strattled the fence and tried to play both sides of the income/support flow, but he was an evil and crazy SOB.

When the Soviets left, the Taliban and other Jihadist factions went for a power grab and started a civil war. All the way up until 9/11, the Taliban did not even control all of Afghanistan, and certain pockets of the country were controled by factions which merged into the Northern Alliance, kind of like the Kurd sector of Northern Iraq after the gulf war.

Internet Lore says the CIA created the Taliban and Bin Laden, and that is simply not true. Two different factions fought the Soviets. Both sides hated each other but they hated the Soviets more. In typical US fashion we pulled the rug out from under our side and left, and with no Soviets to fight the Islamic radical Taliban turned on them.

Russia hasn't been an ally for about ten years now. All the talk of the joint effort on the GWOT/Chechnya, then they smuggle chemical WMD's and nuclear materials out of Iraq on the eve of the second invasion. Then the the one-sided agreement on missile defense, the one-sided START treaty, the support of Iran, and the support of Syria.

Given China's housing bubble collapse and its impending demographic crisis, Russia is certainly a bigger threat.
