I would say Edwards AFB CA, was there from Dec 81-Oct 85. Large FD at the time about 165 of us spread out over 5 stations. Great Fire Chief to work for and we were always busy from the shuttle program and all the test projects that went on. Very close knit group almost like being stationed overseas.

Best TDY Shuttle training at Kennedy Space Center.

I really liked Lackland especially some of the chow halls. Travis was really good for the most part. McGuire, McChord and Vandenberg (now known a Joint Base Lewis McChord) were nice. I had many places on my dream sheet but didnt get to check out too many bases. I think I was stationed, TDY or visited 6 bases.

Galena AS in Galena, Alaska. (Dec 74- Dec 75)
100 miles south of the Arctic Circle.

A small remote station with only 2 F-4E aircraft and about 100 people.

I was a Security Policeman there.

I fished (in the summer), rode snow mobiles (in the winter),
laughed at everything that moved and drank beer for a year.

TSA, I know the "dream sheet" well. Got a couple of my Top 5 or so on it. The job I have now carries me to more bases/Post than I could have dreamed of seeing during my AF carrier. A week from this Friday I head to Yokota and after that I can say I've been to every base in Pacaf. Left Holloman today and will be at Kirtland in the am. Don't think their is a major AF base west of the Mississippi that I have not been to in the nine years I have been doing this job.

Iraklion Air Station on the island of Crete in the Mediteranean. Great 18 month assignment. We had our own beach and it was perfect weather for 10 months of the years. We even had Greek cooks in the chow hall. Base is no longer there.

White Sands Missile Range, NM...only had two, WSMR and Kelly AFB. Kelly was my first duty assignment and number one on my dreamsheet because an Airman that volunteers for long tour overseas will get that, "doesn't matter what you put for CONUS"!

Aside from the family seperation, I liked Port au Prince, Haiti better than my permanent party stations of Ft Polk or Ft Sill.

Templehof Central Airport, West Berlin '71-'75. Even though the Wall was still up and it was still an occupied city from WWII, it had great night life, restaurants and hunting program. Even better, the local Germans remembered the Berlin Airlift and really liked the Air Foprce. They also remembered the Soviet assault on Berlin and still hated the Ruskies with a deep seated passion. Great people, great beer and saunas, and more natural redheads than anyplace outside of Dublin or West Virginia. What a great follow-on tour after a year in Vietnam!

I was enlisted my first four years in the AF and had two tours in Viet Nam. That was not fun but the next twenty years were a blast. I don't think I had a bad assignment in the next 20 years with the Air Force. Other than TDYs, I didn't get to go overseas. I flew B-52s.

In my Army MP days, town patrol in Frankfurt Germany with the 709 MP Bn. In my AirForce SP days I would have to say Chanute AFB IL with Ramstein as a close 2nd.

Aside from having been there for tech school (46 weeks), I'd have to say Lowry airfield.

TDY at England AB for 6 weeks prior to heading to DaNang was a good time. The PMEL shop was shorthanded and swamped. They requested a couple guys. By the time the request processed, they were all caught up so we really had just about nothing to do and got a lot of time off.

mgentry, here's one of your babies that made an unscheduled landing at DaNang in early 72 IIRC. Scuttlebutt had it that a SAM missile was stuck in the wing. No one ever confirmed that and nothing could be seen from our side of the base but it made for interesting conversation and speculation that we would be hit that night (we were not).

Davis Monthan AFB Tucson AZ.
4 wheeling. Rock climbing, firearms, open carry, horses,motorcycles,and almost no winter. Pretty girls in short shorts and halter tops. The town was small and such a good place to live. Duty ate a lot of time though. 24 hours in the silo, 2-3 times aweek, 8 per month, plus training and driving to the missile sites.

Vandenberg AFB in 1974 and 1976. I still can't get over how much fun Southern California was in the 70s. Wyoming was great also, especially for the hunting and fishing and Denver was only about a 100 miles.
