Trying Flying!

Through Groupon my wife and I each got a package for a private flying school. Essentially it's a taste to see if you are interested in going for your license. I think it's 2 hours of ground school then one hour of flight with an instructor which will include some hands on experience!

Can't wait!

You will enjoy the ride. They know once you take the controls, you will be hooked.

I started lessons this spring, unfortunately, $ is an issue. I have almost 8 hrs and 13 landings in the log book, and I can't wait to get back up.

Make sure you get a log book and have the instructor log you first hour PIC time.

Go to your public library and check out "The Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge" or any other pilots guide and study the first few chapters. It'll give you a great understanding of some of the required info to start your flying fun.

PS....Many flight schools use the Cessna 150/152 series as well as the C-172 series of airplanes. Even though it is a bit more expensive to fly, try to rent the C172. It is more comfortable and forgiving to learn on.

The hardest part of learning to fly is paying for it.

The best part of flying is getting paid to do it!

I took one of those introductory flight things many years ago. Ruined my life forever. I'm now cursed with the horrible career of flying private jets to exotic destinations all over the world.

A word of caution: Tow things a man will come to know are guaranteed to humble him; 1) an airplane, 2) ...er....ah... I married one.

Ground school will get you to thinking lift keeps a plane in the air... nope, it's money what does that.

Anyhow, going from a two-dimensional existence to a true three-dimensional one can be as scary as it is exhilarating.

You'll love it.

(Just wait 'till you get into the aerobatic part!)

I found these on the FAA web site if you don't mind reading from a computer screen. Of course you can buy a printed copy or borrow from the library as suggested.

Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge...
http://www.faa.gov/library/manuals/a...ilot_handbook/

Aeronautical Information Manual
http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/ATpubs/AIM/

If you get into it, the first book you should read is Stick and Rudder: An Explanation of the Art of Flying by Wolfgang Langewiesche. Amazon.

Congrats. My wife did the same thing for me for father's day last year. Took the course and lesson on a really slow day, so that two hours actually ended up being about four or five hours, but totally worth it.

Got to fly this nice Piper Warrior on an amazingly beautiful morning. We flew for about two hours or so, then toured and BSed for another couple of hours.

If you have the time, read the above books and/or if you have access to the MS flight simulator, that can help. Honestly it's a lot easier than you think it will be.

The only problem I had was sitting there at the end and tallying all the costs for actually getting a license. With that and a wife who doesnt like to fly, I decided not to continue with the lessons yet. Maybe later.

Post and let us know how it goes!
