Hunting

Has anyone had success with any commonly carried Self-Defense rounds used during a hunt? I would like to offer some but currentlt I have none. I'd like to take a deer this year with my EDC gun.

I feel most serve rounds are just too mild for clean deer kills, Sure it can be done, they can be killed w/ 22lr, but it's up there w/ other stunts that shouldn't be done unless you know what you are doing.

For the most part, ammo, and bullet designs, are made for a specific task. Deer hunting, I presume, is the hunting you are talking about, is not done ideally, with self defense styled ammo. Choose you ammo for the task at hand, and you will be fine. Also to add, hopefully your carry weapon isn't a nine.

Ive done alot of culling of wild animals on farms using pistols mostly (i have used long guns too but pistols for the main part) ive mostly used handloads however the bulk of of those loads mimic most defence loads thats most guys talk about on here.

Never shot deer to be honest although there common here nowdays the bulk of properties i shoot on dont have them, ive shot alot of wild goats (several hundred over the years) plus a similair amount of Roo's, wild dogs and wild pigs too.

My favourite load is a handloaded 9mm using the 124gn XTP loaded at +P velocities (although i have loaded it to 357sig speeds) ive used the .45auto with both 230gn JHP's and 185gn +P's, ive used the 357magnum using a variety of 125gn JHP's, ive used the .40 with both 180gn and 155gn JHP's (only factory loads in the .40 and .45).

357sig has become a favourite ive mostly used a handloaded 125gn GoldDot loaded to factory specs, the 125gn Sierra at the same speed and also the Hornady factory loaded 124gn XTP - the sig had become a favourite due to the fact i always loved what the 125gn 357mag could give but with the added capacity and light weight of the auto, its been exceptionally good for me in the 60 plus animals ive shot dead with it.

As far as animal size goes the biggest animal ive shot dead was a pig which weighed in at roughly 200lbs and was shot dead with the 9mm handload, the goats ive shot range from 130lbs all the way upto 190lbs for some of the big billy's (thats rare but possible). The Roo's ive shot have been anywhere from 100lbs upto 170lbs.

The dogs and pigs some of which were pretty agressive i had no problems taking out using the 9mm or 357mag, so i hope thats of some help any questions you wanna ask ill be happy to answer.

What EDC did you plan on using?

A 155 grain XTP over longshot powder ( a few grains shy of max load) in .40 fired from a G35 with lone wolf barrel worked great on two deer shot broadside. One was shot during the 08 season and the other in 2010. I don't know the ranges as I wasn't the one who took the deer but it was my handloads used. Not sure of velocity from that longer barrel but they average 1275 fps from my Ruger SR40.

I've seen a 9mm 124 +P gold dot drop a deer in less than 10 yards, and another was DRT.

Have heard people taking game with .40 and .45 just fine too.

Many will advise against this though, and FWIW I'm not big into hunting (don't have anything against it, just isn't my thing).

Not with the self delfense cartridge but with a "self defense" bullet, XTPs work very well in muzzleloaders. As for the defensive handgun make sure whatever you are going to use meets any state laws for minimum power factor for hunting. Some states do not have this but some do have a minimum such as 500ft/lbs at the muzzle.

Thanks for posting real world experience and thanks to the others in this thread as well. It should keep some of the 9 haters at bay.

You can't fling a dead cat in Alabama without hitting a live deer--1.7 million IIRC is the latest estimate. This much game gives way to some "experimentation" often referred to as "method hunting". I've taken deer with almost every legal method throughout the years, but just don't fool with them anymore (crossbows and spears are now legal). BTW, I saw a local police chief take several deer one season back when Glocks were "new on the scene". It was a 9mm with whatever crappy 115 or 147 grain ammo was available back in the day. A .40 or .45 would have been better, but (within its limitations) the 9 worked well.

Alabama regulations state "centerfire, mushrooming ammunition" for deer. There is no requirements regarding ft./lbs. of energy (perhaps there should be), but again, it ain't like we're low on venison around here and they don't require the strict management that it once did. Sadly, if you could find mushrooming .25 or .32 ammo, it would be "legal" here, although the vast majority of deer hunters prefer the "overkill" method of magnum cartridges in their rifles.

Ok thanks for the info
Deer over here are actually big on numbers too - just something ive never gotten around to hunting, theres actually a big campaign on here even in local newspapers to get people licensed to hunt deer in state forest's - suprising in such an anti gun climate, not 100% sure what the law dictates on calibers etc but id be interested to know.

Ive had alot of luck with handguns - 9mm has served me well within its limitations, have to admit my 357mag did the job slightly better but everything has its place.

I think if i ever do try deer ill be using a 270winchester - a good load my father makes for it uses a Hornady 140gn.

I dropped a deer last season with my 20SF. One handloaded 180XTP through the LWD 6.02" barrel did the job.
