This is for you reloaders.. does anyone know of a .357 Sig load that will have 550 ft/lbs of energy at 1000 yds. (meant 50 yds)

That is the minimum power required by Colorado DOW to hunt big game. safe.

600 at the muzzle is about maximum. Did you mean 100 yards?

Check the regs again. What would be the point of ft# @ 1000yds when most can't hit w/ a rifle past 300yds? Probably 100yds & that would be a no too.

The .357sig isn't going to make 550ftlbs of energy at 100yds nor 50 yds. At 1000yds it will be in the dirt 700yds back.

Well a 124gr @ 1435fps is 565ft-lb@ the muzzle with 14.5gr of Acc. #9. Be careful & work up slow. I don't know of a factory load this hot. On the other hand it will not be doing it at 100yds.

I meant: Is there a .357Sig load that will have 550ft/lbs energy at 50yds? Not that I would hunt big game with it, but in Colorado the regulations for pistol hunting are minimum 4" barrel, and 550 ft/lbs energy at 50 yds & I am curious if a .357Sig special load could pull that off.

What does the energy of the hottest .357 Sig load come out to for a 147gr bullet at muzzle, 50yds, 100yds & 150yds? I am buying a G35 Gen 4 and a threaded .357 Sig conversion barrel for it.

This is a coyote I took with my G19 9mm with Double Tap 147gr FMJ at 97yds. Took two shots.

I would not hunt with it but the DT 115gr Nosler gives me over 650fpe at 12 feet. I do not know how much it loses at 100 yards. It is going to be hard to top that handloading. I have used Power Pistol and Longshot to some sucess but you will not get to 1,500fps with a 125gr bullet handloading (safely).

If it is only 50 yards and you are using a G34, I would say yes you can probably make it.

The greater the weight of bullet with the 357 sig, the lower the velocity and energy you will get. Just guessing, the max you would reach with a 147gr out of a converted G34 would be 550fpe at the muzzel. You can always go where angels fear to tread.

I understand light bullet vs. heavy bullet but am curious to see the numbers. I have been plugging #'s into

but that shows me what it is at the muzzle, not at 50 & 100yds. I would also like to see what the trajectory would be at 50, 100, & 150yds.

How big was the Coyote, and where did you hit him?

Do you think the DT 147 gr. Gold Dot or other JHP would have done better the first shot.

It was pretty average size, maybe on the skinny side of average. I didn't weigh it or anything. The coyote below was maybe a little bigger or maybe just a thicker coat as I took that picture at well over 11,000ft while mule deer hunting. The one I shot with the G19 was at 7,600ft.

The coyote was on the move when I fired the first shot that hit it in the butt. It spun in circles in one spot chasing it's tail twice as fast as I have ever seen a dog do that. I aimed for the middle of the circle and squeezed off the second shot that dropped it immediately. I was fully supported by a boulder I was leaning over.

I don't think a 147Gr JHP would have dispatched it any quicker. Maybe it wouldn't have been able to stand up anymore, but I doubt it would have done more than that.

There is no load (factory or otherwise) that will maintain 550# at 50yds. 125gr@1600 yields 532#@50yds and that is the closest you will get and that is with a very stout handload out of a 5.3" barrel.
Really hard to get that much energy at distance out of a small pistol cartridge because pistol bullets are relatively light and have a sucky ballistic coefficient.

Even 10mm (180@1350) just makes it with 577#@50yds.

.44 Mag is really as small as I would go at distance for handgun if trying to meet CO's big game rules.
