Great looking 1911s
The .38 Super is harder to find in person per say but is very easy to find on the internet for sale. Price is the same as .45ACP so that is not a factor. The .38 Super is just a nice round thru the 1911 platform, smooth as butter. I also love the sound as strange as that may be. It is a bit different than the sound of the 45 ACP.
Nothing wrong with .45ACP, it is still a incredible caliber and I have 1911s in it. But if I had to choose just one 1911 caliber it would be .38 Super at this point. Not saying it is a better round but just that I prefer it. All things being equal I would say it is a better defensive round than the .38 Super

Also...isn't the real reason we go for a 1911, the 45ACP round? Having a 1911 in 9mm is like buying the V6 Mustang....not nearly as fun and not as reliable, either.
I have a very sweet shooting FN Hi-Power that fills my needs for a single action 9mm. It was designed as a 9mm and works well with that caliber. Designed by the same guy, too.
Nope...I don't get the wants for 1911s in other calibers....sorry.
What is wrong with the 45ACP round?

I don't know about you, but there are several gun shops in my area that carry plenty of .38 Super, all cheaper than .45ACP ammo. Not to mention the on-line purchase option.

I have 1911's in .45ACP, .38 Super and 9mm. I want one in 10mm and .40S&W. Love'em all.

I'm a die hard 10mm fan, but I must beg to differ with you.
The 1911 was made around the .45ACP cartridge. The .38 Super is the only other caliber I would want in a 1911....both calibers tried and proven for decades.
Lots of 1911 makers have had several problems with the 10mm round. The only other 10mm 1911 I would get is a Fusion Arms longslide. I believe they perfected the 10mm round on the 1911 platform. Oh, and maybe a Bren Ten for the display case. IMHO!!

Why did Earl Swagger, a decorated Marine, carry the Colt in .38 Super instead of .45ACP?
Besides, how can you pimp out a .45 ACP? It just doesn't have the flair...the je ne sais quois of the .38 Super.

If I ever did get a 1911 that wasn't 45ACP, 38 Super would be it.
After all, it is really the only round designed specially for the 1911 pistol.

Purists are going to hate me for this, but ever since the 5.7x28 came out, I though it would make an awesome 1911 cartridge. Low recoil, flat shooting, and even single stack I bet you could get 10+ rounds in it.

Back in the 1980s-1990s, there was a wildcat round which was a necked down .45ACP to .22 caliber firing a spitzer bullet.

Now THAT would reach some major velocity. I personally wouldn't want one, but it would be a bird or squirrels worst nightmare

It would have been a body armor nightmare. I think that it was necked down to take the 5.56mm bullet.

I have a 1911 in .45 ACP and .38 Super. I enjoy shooting them both. My current Super load will toss a 124 gr bullet at 1300 fps. Lots of fun!
