Hey guys and gals,

So I am crazy excited because my first ever 1911 should be coming in today!
I have had many polymer pistols, but have always wanted a 1911. Never thought I would get one anytime soon between all the schooling I have to pay for and everyday bills etc. Well that changed when I bought a RIA earlier this week, for $387.00 brand new, shipped,and FFL transferred. It was an amazing deal that I just knew I had to have.

So I am now jumping headfirst into this whole new information pool about the 1911. I just recently joined Glock talk and have been learning and reading tons about the glock pistols. Now I have even more information overload haha.

My main questions are, and I am sure these have been asked by many new owners, (I have used google etc to search for some but wanted your guys opinions) #1. What grips look very good on these? I am debating between punisher grips, or some nice looking tactical grips. #2. I am getting into reloading with my girlfriends brother. Him and I both have RIA's and are wondering what a decent standard target reload recipe is. Possibly wanting a reliable defensive recipe as well if you have any. #3 Are there any things I should immediately do to my RIA to make it more reliable etc, I am wanting to carry this sometimes as well as take it to the range A LOT.

I will search more for the other questions I have rather than posting them all here since there would be hundreds Thanks a ton ahead of time guys! I love this forum, and everyones insight is much appreciated.

Congrats on a great first 1911. That's a great price.

#1 - No Punisher grips. That is forbidden here. Hello Kitty is a better choice.
#2 - Get a couple of reloading guides. Lyman is a good start. Do a LOT of reading first. I would focus on loading target ammo starting out.
#3 - Clean, load, shoot, clean, load, shoot...keep repeating.

Recommendation for grips--google VZ grips, i'm guessing you will find something you like.

Recommendation for increasing reliability--dont cook your own self defense reloads as a beginner ;-)

grips are all personal preference, so what might look good to one could be puke to another. I say, get what you want.

But I will say this, if it's going to be a possible defense gun, then stay away from the Punisher grips. Don't give them any sign to add to the case for the state. But that's just my opinion.

If you have no experience in loading and do not have unlimited access to a very experienced loader may I suggest you pick up a copy of The ABC's of Loading.

This will answer many of the questions you already have about loading and provide you fodder for questions that you may never have thought of otherwise. It will not only give you an excellent overview of loading in general but also introduce you to the different loading equipment available in the market place. While equipment recommendations from friends and other loaders are always well meaning they are often solicited from people whose experience might be questionable or don't take into consideration your current monthly round expenditure and foreseeable increase, number of calibers that will be loaded, available space for construction of loading bench(s), and the inevitable input but the household domestic engineer... if applicable.

By far the most common range/target load is the 200 grain LSWC. They are the least expensive projectile when bought commercially and a very simple projectile to cast.

Because the .45 is a low pressure round it is a very easy round to load for and depending on your intended use you have a plethora of powders to choose from.

i had a few Glocks, and then got a Kimber CDP.I thought I would like the 1911.Wrong!I sold it before I even fired it. I`m used to Glocks.Sorry if I offend the 1911 guys.

First off,

Thank you everyone for the welcomes and answering my questions etc I really appreciate it. Second off yea I thought the punisher grips would be cool looking, But after seeing some of the awesome VZ grips I don't even like the punisher ones anymore!! VZ makes a lot of nice grips! Also I didnt think about it that way knedrgr, I am going to take the advice on not getting the punishers haha.

Yea at $387 total for shipping, gun, and ffl xfer thats an amazing price and I couldn't believe it until I was told its on its way! I am pumped to start shooting this 1911 and customizing it a small bit. Gunna have to get used to it though since I am used to all striker fired weapons etc. I can't wait though!

Another note about my reloading endeavor, I just went out and got a Lymans 49th edition manual today. The girlfriends brother has been reloading for a good 10 years or so. I also am trying to get an older buddy of mine to start teaching me as well. I actually have it down to a point, I made 25 of my own rounds tonight with 6.0 grains of Unique powder. 230gr plated berrys bullets, winchester brass, and CCI large pistol primers. It was actually pretty fun and relaxing. I cant wait to get my own setup, kinda pricing everything around. Debating if I want to drop a couple hundred on a Lee kit and some extra components.

Congrats on the RIA! Can not help on the reloading but...

I put a pair of Hogue soft rubber grips on my American Classic Cmdr and have been very satisified with the performance. The rubber has held up very well and offers more grip then others I tried.

I also put on a pair of xs big dot sights, and upgraded my springs using a wolf springs kit

Oh I well definitely put pics up of it ASAP. I am looking into some hogue grips as well as a nice pair of VZ's. Also meant to ask before, Scamp what grips are on your first 1911 pic you posted?
