Hey everyone,

New member here, so pardon my newb-ness of the subject matter, as this seems to be debated a million times over everywhere I look.

My wife and I are looking to purchase our first handgun for recreational and home purposes. Trying to decide between a Glock 19 or a Springfield XD9...

Before replying, here's where we're at:
- We have shot both firearms (my wife prefers the Glock)
- I'm a lefty, she's a righty (ambi mag release is a plus for me)
- Price point is somewhat of a factor (XD is about $50-100 cheaper in my area)
- XD grip safety (pro or con?)
- Neither of us will not be carrying this firearm

That's about it. I know Glock users will tell me get the Glock and all others will say XD...and obviously, this is Glocktalk.com, which I'm aware of

Other questions:
- If Glock: Gen 3 or 4?
- If Springfield: XD or XDm?


Just looking for some unbiased and honest opinions for a first time gun buyer! I can't make up my mind!!!

I purchased my first Glock, a Gen 3, 19, about 4 years ago. It became my everyday carry. I was and am very pleased with it. (previously carried a Ruger SP 101)
About 18 months ago I purchased an XD Sub Compact 9mm, carried it for a while. Overall, I was not satisfied with the XD ... I have big hands which caused some issues with the grip safety, I found the 19 more accurate , tighter ...
Both ran flawlessly for me, no malfunctions.
About three weeks ago I traded the XD in on a Glock 30 SF - got a chance yesterday to put 150 rounds thru it, performed great, no problems. If it continues to be reliable at the range, it will be my primary carry.
While both guns are from reliable manufacturers, I prefer the ruggedness and reliability of the Glock ... just my experience and opinion.

It's all a matter of personal preference, but this is a 1911 sub-forum, so I will suggest you look at 1911's.

For me, I prefer the XD.

That Mil-Spec up there is a good 'un.

On the original topic, I've had XDs and Glock and I lie the Glocks better for several reasons.

Lower bore axis shoots flatter and faster.

Trigger break and reset are much better on the Glocks.

Less parts and easy to detail strip.

Tons of aftermarket stuff (even though I don't have any).

Spare parts are cheap and available all over the internet.

That many cops and militaries can't be wrong.



The XDs are good guns too, so I'd get whichever one ya'l shoot the best.

I would go with the XD myself.. just because for me the ergos of the glock are just all wrong. I hate the way it feels in my hand.. kinda like an unwieldy brick.. As for between the xd and the xdm I say stay with the xd, what one gets for the larger price aint much imo. Also with Springfield comes most excellent customer service when it comes to warranty issues, Glock I am not so sure about as I do not/ will not own one.

If it were me, I'd get a 2nd or 3rd Gen 19 and call it a day for the above reasons. Personally, I don't care for the XD whatsoever, but you may. Try them both and get what works for you.

HK is nothing but overpriced plastic junk. Why on earth would he want to pay an extra $300 for that when he could have an Austrian beauty?

I also agree, I almost bought a HK P2000sk but settled on an EMP instead. If you're going to get polymer, I would highly suggest looking into HK and Sig. I do like my XD9 though, but I would never think about carrying it.

I say pick up a 1911.

had the G19, and I liked that over shooting Quack's old XDm. Couldn't stand the XDm, so SA should just stick to making quality 1911s.

I have a Gen 3 G19 and a XDM 9 (4.5). They are both superb firearms. All in all, the XDM is slimmer and feels much better in my hand overall. The G19 is difficult for me to get the pad of my finger on the trigger. However, all in all, I enjoy the G19 more and it is tried and true. If I was going for reliability and the wife likes the G19, I think that is your pick. Gen 4 would probably be the best of both worlds since it might help w/ you being a lefty. However, the XDM is a real nice pistol and my wife is deadly w/ the XDM but can't hit the broadside of a barn w/ the G19. The ergonomics of the XDM fit her much better.

The Glock 19 and XD9 are both fantastic guns. There is nothing wrong with a grip safety just ask the 1911 folks. I prefer the Glock 19 over the XD9 but again both are good weapons. If this gun is primarily for her then go with what she feels more comfortable with. Both guns will get the job done. Maybe get the G19 now and the XD9 later. Another thing to consider is that are you using this ever for conceal carry and even if its a primary home gun sometimes you may need to carry it. The G19 is a little more comfortable to carry. Also the G19 is easier to custom and unless its the Gen 4 version you don't need a break in.


The XD will need some break in. The gun you fired was probably a rental or a friends gun that has had many rounds through it and is now smoother. The XD especially the mag release is really tight. For XD/XDM, a Springfield Custom Shop rep quoted to me "Yes, they need about 250 to 500 to get it running smooth but not every XD/XDM will need that many". It took me about 250 for my XD45c and 500 for my XD40 before they were running really smooth. Mag release, recoil spring, ejecting.

I own / owned 2 XDs (purchased NIB), a .45 Compact and a .40 Tactical. Both were flawless from day one. Yes, the mag release is tight, but that can be worked out without firing. My friend has / had 8 of them with the same results.

The issue with the mag release on the GEN 4, is if you both shoot the gun you don't want to be flipping it back and forth, that will get old quick. I know a few lefties and they insist on learning the mag release the way it is (using their index finger) so it doesn't limit what they can shoot. It's not like it's awkward, like say manipulating a single sided safety as a southpaw. Although it's a bit different, when I shoot my H&Ks, I manipulate the mag release with my trigger finger.

The G19 is the best Glock, in my opinion.
