Black Stainless Question

In regards to a Springfield Armory Loaded in two tone stainless.
How or what gives the black finish on the "rounds" and external pieces?
Can the externals such as the thumb safety, barrel bushing, ect. be polished back to bright stainless?
If it is a coating, can it be bead blasted off and then polished?
If it is a metal surface treatment, same question or any other suggestion.
I guess I should have first asked if these parts are indeed stainless or carbon steel.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Jim,

I would suggest checking with Springfield as to whether those parts are stainless. Basically there are two ways to make stainless black, a black oxide process (basically like bluing) and a coating/paint type of finish. Either can be removed by sand blasting, and there should be no reason you cannot polish the parts to a bright reflective finish if that is what you are looking for.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.
Since I always put a Bullet Proof Slide Stop on my 1911's I can always experiment with the original.
That way if it doesn't work out I haven't hurt the parts that will stay on the gun.
Thanks again.
Maybe drop you a line when I work on it and let you know what I've found.
