Tony Phan Brings Home Another Win For Team S&W

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — The trophy case at corporate headquarters in Springfield, Mass. just got a little more crowded as Team Smith & Wesson’s Tony Phan swept all but one stage on his way to winning the Limited-10 title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) 2010 Area 4 Handgun Championship sponsored by firearms maker STI International.

The dominating performance by the Webster, Texas resident not only gave him a 226 point lead over his nearest competitor, but the win also brings the 158-year-old gun maker’s win tally to 38, the most wins of any factory supported shooting team.

“Tony put on a devastating shooting clinic this weekend in taking the STI Area 4 Limited-10 title. My congratulations to Tony and Team Smith & Wesson,” said Michael Voigt, president of USPSA.

Coming in second was Anthony Luciani of Phoenix, Ariz. who was the only shooter to best Phan on a stage with his winning run on stage 12. Luciani finished the match with a final score of 1186.7775.

Jim Bodkin of Canyon, Texas won the Limited-10 title the last two years but fell to third this year shooting 1003.0205. Rounding out the top five were Arnold Brown of Mesquite, Texas with a final score of 951.8006 and Paul Grundhauser of North Branch with 884.2483.

The STI Area 4 Handgun Championship was held at the Shootout Range in Princeton, La. The match drew 230 top shooters from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, the four states that make up Area 4, as well as Arizona, California, Georgia, Idaho Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin and Canada.

The next regional championship on the practical shooting calendar is the Canyon Creek Area 5 Championship scheduled for June 10-13 at the Tri County Gun Club in Polo, Ill. For more information on USPSA, upcoming matches and full match results, visit www.USPSA.org.

Tony Phan is a hell of a good guy. Shot the Texas Single Stack Shootout with him in San Antonio at the Rivercity Shooters/Blackhawk match.
