Just got my 870!
My brother finally mailed my Christmas present (yes, seriously), a used 12-ga 870 Express Magnum! The receiver is parkerized; it's got a cheap-o pistol grip and new barrel w/choke tube & rifle sights. The barrel finish is not parkerized, it's a polished blue finish. He bought the barrel separately, because when he obtained it, the entire gun was less than 20" long... anyway, it's now entirely legal and arrived at my FFL today.
I'd take pics, but it's in the trunk of my car at the office, and I don't want to walk into work carrying it... not until a Friday, anyway...
I'm going to try it out this weekend, but I'm almost certain that the pistol grip will be the first to go. I'm considering selling it complete to get a new, fully-parkerized model. Any ideas what this gun will go for?

Why don't you just get a parked police barrel?

870's rock. As you can see, they can be whatever you want.

If you put a full stock on it, you should be able to put the original barrel back on it. Any chance of getting that back from your brother?

Maybe I'll do that; but I also want to change out the foregrip, stock, and add a mag tube... so at that point, I might as well just get a new weapon, right?

Maybe? This thing was SHORT; and I understood that there was a minimum barrel length, regardless of overall weapon length.
I found it odd, also, that my FFL categorized this as a handgun & I had to show that I was 21 (as of 11 years ago) to pick it up.

There is an 18" barrel minimum. Close the action (UNLOADED), and stick a tapemeasure down until it hits the breach face. If it is less than 18" you have to have special permits and tax stamps. Under 18" I would be actively destroying the barrel (bandsaw, cutting torch, sledgehammer ect...) because if the boys in black catch you with it and a gun that fits it, they will assume that the two go together.

I've seen pictures, and the barrel was WAY less than 18". But for all I know, it's been destroyed, because I don't have it. Like I said, my brother sent me a blued barrel with rifle sights... still wondering what I should do with it.

Congrats on your 870. Fine weapon and good platform to
build on, if you want.
Check JD's page at www.aiptactical.com
He specializes in 870's and can do anything you want or
give you some good advice. Lot's of good reading on his
web page also.
He can parkerize your parts, swap barrels, beef up the inside,
and may have some used stocks and such around if you
want to change something. Good luck.

Great! And better late than never.
As mentioned why not just get an 18" or 18.5" barrel if you are wanting it for defense. Also, look around as sometimes you can find the +2 extensions for cheap. I got mine from my gun store for $20.

Another GT'er is selling me a parkerized 18.5" barrel! Thanks USDB2FCI!
Next, yes, I need to find a parkerized +2 extension and a 12" LOP stock. I like the Hogue overmolded stuff.

This is a Wilson 2 shot extension with no sling plate. Part SGET-U-2
They are very solid, parkerized, and come with the
new spring and a hi-viz follower. I bought 2.
Great deal for only $45.00.
Check out this thread for a pic.

I'm going to check into that.
I went to the range today to try it out--but my local range doesn't permit pistol-grip shotguns! Bizarre. Anyway, I'll be headed to an outdoor range sometime soon to try it. I miss living in Maine... I'd just walk down the road a little way.
