Best Ammo For .40 S&W

Since I just got amazing feedback from you guys, I thought I might ask some questions that I have been wondering about for a long time. So what is the best ammo for my Glock 23 .40 S&W? I kinda already have a certain set of ammo, but i would like to hear what you guys use. Hey I also saw that some of you guys went to my website. Thank you very much.

My vote is for 180gr winchester PDX-1. Thats what FBI agents feed their 23's

Home/Self Defense - Speer Gold Dot, Remington Golden Saber, Cor-Bon (generally the lightest bullet in the caliber and bullet design - my personal choice is the Remington 165 gr. With that said, there are no "magic bullets", good shot placement is the most important factor in handgun defense effectiveness.

Range Time - Your own reloads, UMC, Winchester White box

Accuracy - Generally, any of the above will be as accurate as you are unless you are at longer ranges and are a pretty good shooter - beyond these limitations, you may need to experiment a little.

Winchester Ranger- T 180gr HP for SD defense.

Range/practice ammo, I couldn't tell you as I reload my own ammo.

I've always had good results with Al case Blaser 165 & 180 fmj
As for defend the fort stuff there is a lot of options and opinions
Do some searching
As long as it's 180 grains and jhp I wouldn't worry to much
I use Win bonded 180 jhp white box-sorta cheap and a good performer

For SD/HD I use Doubletap Nosler 135gr and for range whatever is cheapest usually WWB from walmart does the trick for me

For carry any DT JHP 135,155,165 or 180 gr 38 dollars and change for box of 50. For range I reload my own when prices we low I bought 1500 rounds of CCI blazer brass. I prefer 165 gr DT golden sabers for SD in my G27 but in my G22 its DT 135 gr Noslers

I'd prefer, in this order:

Federal HST
Ranger T(tie between these top two)
Winchester PDX-1/Bonded Ranger T(same thing, but the 180 Bonded T is loaded hotter)
Hornady TAP FPD or Custom with XTP bullets
Hornady Critical Defense
Speer Gold Dot(tie between this and the Hornady's)
Remington Gold Sabers
Federal Hydra-Shock 155gr

I usually prefer 165gr, but I'll take 180 or 155. With Federal Hydra-Shocks I'll take 155 over 180 any day. I have yet to see any 165gr Critical Defense locally as it's rather new, but it's the hottest stated factory velocity I've seen yet - 1175fps and 506ft/lbs at the muzzle from a 4 inch barrel.

For FMJs I prefer American Eagle or PMC Bronze.

You should be fine with any of the premium loads by the most respected manufacturers. HST, Gold Dot, Golden Sabers, Ranger-T's, they are all good.

I prefer 165gr but 180gr is good too.

Home Defense? I am currently using Remington 180 gr. JHP (L40SW2B) purchased in the 100 rd. value pack. It is what I could find locally and I will use it until I can find something better. Hopefully I will be able to find some 155-165 gr. Winchester Ranger T or Federal HST.

Range time? I have been using Federal Champion 180 gr. FMJFN. POI is POA at 15 yds. I have also used Magtech 165 gr. FMJ and Winchester White Box 165 gr. FMJ. With these loads, POI is about 1 inch above POA at 15 yds. Estimate of POI is based on group center and not individual isolated shots fired. All shooting is done from a two-handed standing position.

Accuracy? Firing 10 round groups: Federal 180 gr. FMJ & Winchester 165 gr. FMJ = +/- 2.5 inches at 15 yds. I fired no 10 round groups using the Magtech 165 gr. FMJ. Firing 15 rd. groups: Federal 180 gr. FMJ = +/- 4.0 inches. Magtech and Winchester 165 gr. FMJ = 3.0 inches. Composite 25 rd. groups run 4 inches with both the 180 gr. FMJ and the 165 gr. FMJ ammo. I note fewer fliers (operator error) with the 165 gr. FMJ ammo. I also find the 165 gr. loads to be more pleasant to fire in an extended range session. HTH. Sincerely. Brucev.

The only recent data I could find, but it shows GS 165 gr. to be pretty good, followed by GD 155 gr. 180's are down on the list.
