Patch for Wireless card on Ubuntu for WEP crack?

My room mate doesn't think that it is possible to crack his WEP code for his wireless, but I have seen online where people have been doing it.

I looked into it a little bit and see that I need to get a patch for my wireless card.

First of all, through Ubuntu how do I find what card my laptop has?

Second, is cracking wep difficult?

I know that it is illegal to do without permission, and the only reason I am interested is really just to see if I can do it and prove my know it all friend wrong.

Thanks for any help, I'm running Ubuntu 9.10

I tried this a couple years ago with some decent success...took a few hours iirc to crack my roommates wifi. I was running ubuntu and using aircrack or airsnort...airsomething. You really shouldn't need a patch for WEP though, maybe you're thinking of WPA?

To find what wifi card you have(assuming its internal), open a terminal and type "lspci" no quotes, and hit enter.. it'll display the all the internal devices info.. including the chipset on your wireless device.

The easiest thing to do, is download the BacktrackOS.. its a Linux OS designed to run from CD and crack networks. Some devices will crack a network key that has sufficient traffic, while others support "injection" and it doesn't matter if the network has traffic or not.

There's actually a bunch of youtube videos of people using backtrack to crack a network...

I'll give backtrack a try. Also is there any preinstalled program on Ubuntu 9.10 that will be able to burn the iso to a disc for me, or do I have to go back and do it through Windows?

It'll burn it. Last time I used ubuntu you could just right click on an ISO and pick burn image to disc.

Another interesting thing is coming up...

I burned the iso image onto the disc and it started booting up, but it stopped while it was still showing all the boot up info on the screen and it looks like it froze. Does it just take a while? Its been on this screen for maybe 5 mins without changing

It could be a bad burn... I've never really used Nautilus to burn CDs, usually I use Gnomebaker or K3b. You could try burning it again, and burn it slow(4-6x) and see if that corrects the problem.

Also, if you wanna convince your roommate that this is quite possible, just tell him to google. Easy WEP Crack, and he'll become enlightened...

my buddy is about a month away from graduating with a masters in information assurance. (he is a security guy.) I know he spent a good deal of time last semester cracking WiFi networks. fyi.

WEP can be broken in a matter of minutes if you know what you are doing. Use WPA.
