I clicked, but really what good is more troops when there's no gold to do anything with them.

Well you can randomly attack people and see if anyone has any gold left.
The few scraps you find you can use to arm your army.
At some point Eric is going to work out something to generate gold for us, something like assigning men as miners.
If that's the case all those men that are unarmed you suddenly convert into miners and then they are making you gold.
