Lubrication
Thinking about switching over to some high temp lithium wheel bearing grease for my AR. I've been using oil for quite sometime, but I defiantly like what I've read about using grease.
Wondering if anyone has experience with a grease rather than an oil. And if so, what is a good recommendation? I'm sure quite a few of you have switched over to grease over oil.

I have been using a high temp. multi purpose automotive grease until today. It was in the 40's, windy, and raining today during an 8hr. carbine class. The grease stayed thick and ever started to harden and cause issues. During warm weather it is awesome. Cold weather, not so much.

What kind of grease? I've gone shooting below freezing with lithium-moly grease. When I do it, though, I use a very light (barely visible) coat of grease with ample oil.

Wheel bearing grease on the BCG rails is awesome. I like oil in the BCG/on the bolt but grease on the rails is works well for high wear areas.. In CA I rarely have to worry about temps that effect it much. If I am taking my AR out with me when I coyote call for a friend in the mountains where it drops in the 30's I will just run oil on the rails.

I use lithium wheel bearing grease in all but the coldest weather. Never had a problem.

Grease is too thick in cold weather. In addition, add gunk and carbon and it gets thicker. Oil is the best.

I like to use a combination of TW25b grease and CLP. The TW25b's viscosity stays stable. Temperatures don't matter anymore if you use TW25b. Awesome stuff.

Hey Austria,I have to agree with you. Right now I'm using
Magnalube-G grease and CLP. There are so many excellent
brands of grease and oils now it's overwhelming. I lean toward
the synthetics some times. Personally I like running my weapons
"juicy". Like my brother would always say "I've never seen anything wear out or break from over lubrication"!!!!

Use a thinner grease, one that doesn't thicken up so bad in the cold or after it has collected a lot of powder residue. I'm not a big fan of oil only. It's gone too quickly. Who wants to re-oil their rifle every 2 days? Not I. Grease stays. Oil doesn't.

What weight motor oil are you guys using?
I am thinking about switching to motor oil because gun oil seems to evaporate. I'm a M1 fan myself.

Well, another idea would be gear oil. Synthetic doesn't have that smell. 75w90 will work fine but there is also the 75w140.

ATF! Stinks but it's cheap and works well.
For all you FrogLube guys, I've seen a few people claim it's the same as Thompson Center Natural Lube 1000 and a lot more expensive.

I use the same 0-20 mobil one that that I use in my truck...when I feel that it's not high speed enough sometimes, I pour it in a black bottle that has SEAL slick penciled in on the side and I light a $10 on fire...I feel better about myself then.

I've used motor oil, clp, gear oil, bearing grease, waterproof grease, hell even chapstick. The main thing is to have lube.
Grease works good as long as stated above you don't live in a Cold climate.

I've tried frog Lube, CLP, Slip 2000 and Super Lube Synthetic Grease, Tretra Gun etc.
In the end I just use Mobile 1. Its designed to provide lubrication in high temp applications with tight tolerance metal parts and help clean carbon deposits. Darn...why didn't I start with that... Works fine. $8 a quart.
The only grease I use on an AR is the Lubriplate lithium grease I use on the barrel nut when I'm building a gun or changing a barrel.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I just stick with CLP. Cover the BCG in it, blast off 400 rounds at the range, clean the gun, repeat. Works for me.
