OMG got my stuff but it doesn't have the info?
Uh oh...
I received the bulk of my stuff today to get started, one item of which was the Lyman reloading handbook...
I was looking to load .40 180 gr fmj as my first try, but would you believe, the only load data they have in 180 gr is jhp?
Help?

The only real diff will be your OAL. If you are using starting data, then it isn't going to matter much. Just anothe reason to have multiple data ref points. A single source will never cut it.

A JHP will be longer than a FMJ. So if you load to the same OAL your pressure will be a little higher. Your gun is different than the one than they used also. So start at the low end and then work your way up looking for an accurate combo. Once you find that stop. Running at or near max just puts extra wear and tear on you and your gun.
What powder were you thinking about using?
I am fond of win 231 and WSF in 40 SW with 180gr.

Red wouldnt it be the pressure would be more with the JHP? Since the JHP is longer more of the bullet will be in the case to get the same OAL.
I personally start above the staring load by around .3-.5 grain depending on the powder due to the fact that the firearms I shoot have heavy springs. Until you know how your firearms react start with the starting load and work your way up by .2-.5 grain increments, make around 10 cartridges of each increment until you get the desired accuracy and recoil.

Just load them as long as will fit the barrel (-,005") and don't worry about book oal for 180gr bullets.

The 2nd link has an FMJ load for Power Pistol. I would start at 5.8gr of PP at the recommended OAL and work the load up closer to the 6.8 they list on that site eventually. The 180gr FMJ load that site lists and the 180gr JHP load in the Lyman manual are for the most part spot on. The recommened max for the 180jhp is 6.7gr vs the 6.8gr for an FMJ.
Power Pistol fills the case more than the HP38 or 231 load you mentioned which will make a double charge more obvious and the powder level easier to see. For someone starting out those are too big pluses. Also Power Pistol can get you up into the higher velocities and help keep pressures down to safe levels.

I've been snooping around at some other gt threads and maybe the winner would be:
Hp-38 or win 231 @4.1 gr 1.125...... Looks like a winner..

You need to start low and work things up. You don't find a "winner" you develop a load for yourself.
