recommend me a low cost, intro 1911...thinking a Norinco?
never owned one before, but am getting the bug i guess. was hoping to stay as cheap as possible, and it seems in that price range the Norinco is a standout, but looking for advice in the matter.

Currently the best low cost 1911 on the market is the Rock Island Armory 1911. I've seen them new for $407 plus tax in my local area. You can get a tactical model for about $469 plus tax. Very well made pistol.

Norincos are built with better parts, and steel than any of your low cost phillipino 1911s. This doesn't mean those respective guns are crap, it just means that the Norincos were just that good of a deal.

A Norinco was my first 1911 and look where that got me.  They're gonna be harder to find than a RIA, but they're a better gun. Both are great starter 1911's. But a good gunsmith will upgrade your Norinco, where as a lot of smiffs won't touch a RIA.

I've had a Norinco, and while they are a solid 1911, they really aren't in the same league as a Metro Arms, which I think is right up you ally.

Personally I wouldn't consider any cheap gun other than a Springfield.

Norincos are about the best value for the money in low cost 1911s.
As mentioned above, they are built from better quality materials than the Filipino 1911s.

I have had two Norinco 1911's, and both were excellent. Nothing against RIA, but the Norinco is made of far better materials and the fit and finish is similar. The problems is finding one in this country. I still see a nice used one show up in a shop occasionally, but it's not like you can just go to the store and order one.

I have a Norinco. I bought it in '92 and I wish I would have bought several of them.
It's bone stock except for a 2-piece guide rod and 18.5lb recoil spring. I replaced the barrel bushing awhile back too.
I shot it last week and it averaged 3.5" groups at 20yds using my reloads and Tula steel cased stuff.

Will a Ruger SR1911 fit the "introductory" role?
I was also looking for an introductory priced 1911. Because I feel that owning a 1911 is a firearms enthusiast moral imperative, I needed just one. I'm not an 1911 aficionado, so I read BAC's 1911 buying guide.
I wanted just one decent 1911 that wouldn't break the bank, made in the U.S.A., and backed by a reputable manufacturer. The SR1911 fit the bill.

Agree, but while the Norinco has better materials, I'm betting the Filipino guns are more refined judging from the few I've handled... I really liked mine, but it was very rough.

How about a Para GI Expert? Never handled one but have heard they are a great value.

I have one. Its been a nice gun, and I like it, but I would recommend a Springer or Ruger over it any day. Same price range, but you will see better quality. Also, the grips that come with the Para are plastic and terrible. Mine was cheap as free, so I can't complain too hard.

They are really great values. The only reason I sold mine was because I was upgrading to another 1911...kinda wish that I held onto it.

I went with a Springfield Milspec.
Known quantity and still in production.
The Ruger wouldn't be bad. Haven't handled one, but even Ruger can't screw up a hundred year old design that bad.

Spend more money for something better. Buy used, to get the most gun for the $. There is no good reason to buy a crappy Chinses gun over an American one, so it will come in a "new gun" box. I hate Ruger, but I'd take it over a Norinco in half a second.
