Mac 90???

I was offered a unfired new in the box Norinco Mac 90 for $600. Is it worth it? Is there anything I need to know about this rifle either good or bad before I would buy it?

Thanks.

The MAK 90's are great AK-pattern rifles. Seems a bit high to me, but I bought mine some time ago for a hundred fifty bucks when they were dirt cheap and plentiful.

I got rid of the thumbhole stock some time back. It's been a very reliable rifle, as one expects; zero malfunctions, no problems of any kind. I did change out the trigger and compliance parts, but otherwise everything is stock.

I've never heard anyone complain about the MAK 90's. In my opinion, especially for the money back then, one of the better buys in an AK pattern rifle.

I would not pay any more than $450, and it would have to be in very nice shape. The last Mak-90 I bought was $175, in 2000.

That's a pretty good deal if it has a milled receiver, but is about $100 high if it is stamped.

They are good rifles. The receivers are top quality, and so are the barrels. Fit and finish is quite good on most of them. They are also easy to convert to 922 compliance with the desireable evil features.

The only downside is that some can have brittle parts in them. While it is rare, you do see occasional broken bolts and chipped front trunions in MAK-90 rifles. Again though, this is rare. It also usually shows up immediately if it does show up at all. I would not let it keep me from buying a nice MAK-90 at the right price.

I'm in one of my moods so bare with me ...

I think it is so stupid when guys come on the web and say, "I'd never give more then 400 bucks for that gun and it better be pristine. Why back in '83 I bought mine for 57 dollars and I thought that was too much"

Give me a freakin' break.

The Mak-90, for the money is one of the best buys in the AK world. I've owned 7 or 8 of them, all great shooters. Mak-90's due to their popularity have gone up. They are getting harder to find all the time, especially new in the box.
Gun broker continually gets bids of 600 plus for Mak's that are used. Stuff goes up, it's the way of the world.

If the gun is "pristine" in the box 600 is not that far from reality. Offer him 550. and you'll have a great gun at a fair price. (in today's market, that is)

Check and see who the importer was, be careful of B-West. Take the stock off and make sure (at that price anyway) that the receiver was cut straight and not slanted. Way easier to find butt stocks for it. IronWood makes one for the slant but the original wood needs the straight. Other things, like any gun, look for rust or damage. Other then that you will be good to go

Enjoy the gun, remember if you take the thumbhole stock off and replace it with a butt stock and pistol grip, you need to be 922r compliant.

Tailhunter is right....the mak 90 is a top notch shooter.....I bought mine new back in 86 and its still one of my favorites. Oh .....it was $219 back then. Used ones in excellent shape go for $450 in the box. Ild offer $500.

That turned out well. I do believe that I'm going to buy it. Mine will be getting a ACE folding stock and a muzzle brake too. I guess I can say by by to the rear tang!

Nice rifle by the way! I can't blame you for loosing the thumb hole stock.

Well, I ended up passing on the Mac 90. I'm now looking at a alternative. I currently have a older Bulgarian AK (5.45mm) and also a WASR-10 from CAI (unfortunately.)

I'm opened for suggestions. The budget is $1k.

1. It has to have a folding stock preferably side folding, but a under folder is ok too. The stock MUST be made of metal. No plastic.

2. It must be in the pre ban configuration.

3. It must NOT be a CAI gun.

4. It must be as short as possible without NFA paper work and not a bull pup.

5. It MUST be chambered in 7.62X39mm.

Help me find my next AK!

Thanks!

Best of both worlds. Norinco and a de-banned Mak-90

$875

Otherwise, that's a good contender.

Check out the polish underfolder. I love mine. Shoots great and not a hiccup after 500+ rounds.

Just saw you don't want a CAI.

Sell the Century POS, and add the money to your $1000. You then have two options:

1) Use the money to buy an Arsenal SGL21 with a folding metal stock. Then you can send the rifle and extra money to Rifle Dynamics to have their front end conversion done.

2) Buy a Krebs 103k. Use the left over money (and probably some more) to put a folding stock on it.

I'm liking this idea! More to think about!

Well, the guy that I was orginally talking to came through with the Mac-90 after all! He sold me the gun (it's mint) and five 30 round steel mags for $500!

I'm picking the gun up in the morning. So, all I have to add are the parts for 922r, the ACE folding stock with the internal receiver block (I do have to chop the rear tang for installation), Hogue pistol grip, Midwest Industries aluminum railed hand guard, Krebs custom offset front pistol grip mount/tango down vertical grip combo, Surefire G2 LED light and mount, Blackhawk sling, Rear sight from Tech Sight, Krebs oversize selector lever, Krebs trigger pin retaining plate and the AK-47 Battle Comp.

That will be my combo! What do you think?

In all honesty the folder is cool looking but if you want a great repeatable cheek weld then go with the Vltor milspec adapter and a Magpul ACS-L butt stock. The Midwest industries is a great rail system. I personally don't like a front PG but do love the magpul afg. Look into the US palm for the rear PG. They are sweet. The rest is up to you.

Now let's see some pics.
