Need a recommendation: Accurate #5, 165g PFN, 40S&W
This forum has been a great source of info and I appreciate everyone sharing their expertise and experiences freely here.
I recently ran out of Hogdon Universal and bought a bottle of Accurate No.5 to try in my 40S&W loads. I am using 165 grain Rainier FN plated bullets and haven't found a load recommendation for that bullet & powder. Anybody seen published data or have good experience with a specific number of grains of No.5 powder with that bullet? I don't have a chrony yet; it's next on my wish list. (No chance in the world my wife will read this and buy me one for Christmas, so it really IS a WISH list!) I'm hoping someone has had some experience they would be willing to share, or knows where I can find published data for this combination...I would be most grateful for it.
Why the change to a different powder? I use a Lee 2000 progressive loader with a Pro-Auto Disk measure. With the Hogdon Universal, one setting dropped 4.9 - 5.1 grains consistently, which seemed a bit hot for shooting steel matches. The next lower setting dropped 4.2 - 4.4 grains, which was so light there were times I felt is was barely cycling the slide, had a couple of FTF's so decided to undo the last 200 rounds I made and start over.
