This 'last will' of a dog, Blemie, was written in 1940 when the evils of WW2 were going strong. Thinking about peaceful days with one's faithful old Dalmatian dog would sound pretty good in contrast to what was happening back then.
I recently read a contemporary book, "The Year of Living Doggedly" by Peter Marmorek. A retired high school teacher, he and his wife got a labradoodle puppy and kept notes of their first year with him in Toronto and on a prolonged vacation in rural Gaspe, Quebec.
Another recently-read contemporary book is, "Proof of Heaven" by Eben Alexander, a neurosurgeon in Lynchburg, Virginia who was in a coma for a week (near death experience) and visited heaven at that time. I noticed that he saw dogs in heaven.
