For me, it's a no brainer. I'll take a carbine over a shotgun for home defense. But I have extensive experience running a carbine CQB indoors.
With that said, nothing WRONG with a shotgun for HD. And I wouldn't feel the LEAST bit behind the curve with a shotgun.
