Not going to address the politics/debates side of this, but the question of history repeating itself....the best quote I heard and I love is this:

"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme."

Attributed to Mark Twain, but I'm not sure if that's accurate. One thing he DID say that is solidly attributed:

"It is not worth while to try to keep history from repeating itself, for man's character will always make the preventing of the repetitions impossible."
