The S&W 15-22 looks like a nice rifle but is very pricey for a 22. My son has a Marlin carbine that is very reliable, accurate and cost a little over $100 on sale. Ruger 10-22 is another great option, costs more than the Marlin but has more aftermarket support, in particular larger magazines. The new takedown Ruger is a pretty nice set-up as well.
Ruger 22's are excellent pistols but be warned they are a pain in the ass to take apart and clean.
