If Joe2Golf were taken completely by surprise (and it sounds as if he were), perhaps he could have gotten killed making a sudden move for his weapon. No weapon, no move.

There's not enough information in his post to determine whether he could have been forewarned. Rural area, city area, deserted street, crowded street, daytime nightime, etc.
