I'll say it: I hate Gmail

As someone who cut their email teeth on Hotmail accounts, I'm use to easy controls like blocking spam senders by email account, or even the domain completely.

Tired of receiving ads from shewillloveyou@longlonglongtime.net?
Just block all email from longlonglongtime.net!

Gmail makes this nearly impossible. You have to waste your time making filters that are unsightly and don't seem to keep your phone from getting an alert at 3am when you get new messages to it.

Couple that with Google buying Youtube, I have to have Gmail, GoogleVoice, and Youtube all on the same Gmail address unless I want to keep signing in and out all the time. HATE HATE HATE.

I don't care if all the cool kids laugh at me, I'm switching to the new Outlook.com mail and hopefully there is a decent app for it on my phone.

Essentially, they're all the same. The only real advantage of gmail is that it's a few characters shorter than outlook. Makes putting down your email a little bit faster.

RonS 04-21-2013 15:36

Gmail runined email. Now everyone want to be cool like Gmail. Instead of just working. Gmail makes Lotus Notes look good.

Ok, that was over the top. Nothing makes Notes look good.

This really gets to me!
I don't want that interconnection! Email is not you tube, I have separate accounts and want them separate!

I heard the new microsoft email is decent.. I might switch. I have a hushmail account but everyone gets thrown off by the name.. its kinda weird..

CitizenOfDreams 04-21-2013 16:13

Am I the only one here who still uses POP3/SMTP and does not care about the web interface?

Also, am I the only one here who reads e-mail on his own schedule, without waking up every time a new message is received?

Fred Hansen 04-21-2013 16:19

:dunno:

I must be living my life wrong. I haven't received any spam in 7 or 8 years now.

Me wanna be loved long time.

The bar chicks in the P.I. always had the best lines, "Hey sailor-boy! You love me no ****? Buy me air-condition Honda!"

Ah... Those were the days...

Outlook.com with a @live.com is what I use and I really enjoy it. It's not cumbersome, it's kinda sleek, acts like exchange when interacting with my iPhone, and is genuinely easy to use. Can't really speak for what it's like on Outlook because I rarely use a Computer email client anymore. Just about everything I do email wise, is on my phone these days.

Yes, it's maddening, especially since there are only about a zillion other email hosting sites out there.

Shinytop 04-21-2013 18:00

Just drag the mail to your spam folder. All mail from that sender will go there from now on. Simple once you know it.

paynter2 04-21-2013 18:04

I think all email is bad - regarding spam. How do your write a filter that eliminates spammers who programatically change the 'from' address?

A simple solution would be a 'switch' on your 'in' box to view only mail from 'contact' or, alternatively, all mail - including spam. A 'delete' function for everything except 'contact' would be good too.

If someone from GT mails you and they are not on your contact list, you would see it when you view everything. Until then (view everything) you wouldn't have to sort through spam.

Glock!9 04-21-2013 18:05

I have been using gmail since it started and I have no idea what you ae talking about

Angry Fist 04-21-2013 18:07

Hotmail, dood.... **** Gmail. If there is an explicit () video on youtube, I'll just watch it on Bing.

Kevin108 04-21-2013 18:17

I've loved Gmail for years but the new compose post-it note made me switch back to Thunderbird. Not missing the web interface at all. Between being comfortable with a desktop e-mail client and privacy concerns, I will probably migrate completely back to my own domain's e-mail.

I like Gmail but the 'post-it-note compose' bugs me. Is there a way to turn it off?

If Youtube and GoogleVoice were provided by other companies you'd have to have multiple accounts, so this doesn't really seem like a negative. You can choose to have multiple accounts, or you can choose not to.

Whew. I thought you were losing it for a second. Lol

My gmail does a good job filtering. I dislike the new compose format, tho. I'll get used to it, but it seems different without improving. ????

It's their "new compose." http://lifehacker.com/this-shortcut-...-mov-473450552 is the best work-around I've seen so far.

Slug71 04-21-2013 19:47

I use it but will admit its kinda horrible. The google interface is a complete clusterf..k IMO...

This. I cannot recall ever getting spam in my inbox. The new compose is ok. Mostly just different.

Don't enter your gmail address on porn sites?

jdeere_man 04-21-2013 20:22

I've had hotmail since for about 15 years. I can't think I'll ever change. I'm have a gmail account because I needed a google account for a few things, but I don't use it and I hate the interface, seems very archaic.

rednoved 04-21-2013 20:29

I just manage all of my email accounts through Outlook. They also go through my phone.

Exactly as I have and do.
I go on gmail about every other month to just delete everything.

That's what I do. I love Gmail, but of course I haven't actually used the web interface for many years.

I use Thunderbird to retrieve my email from several email accounts (some Gmail, some not) and download them all and store them locally forever.

gjk5 04-21-2013 22:39

cannot stand Gmail, use it for my "junk" addresses. My wife uses it for freakin business!

I stick with an exchange email account provided by my company for regular emails and calendar. I just set her up with Outlook web for calendar sharing (she still comes to me with a damn planner book and tries to "sync" our month!!!)

I wish she would join this century. We are planning a two week trip overseas for next year and she keeps waving that damn spiral bound crap-pad and post its in my face, get with the fuggin program!!!
