Has Marlin (Remington) Really Taken A Huge Smelly Dump>?
 

I had a 336 in the mid-70's in .35 Remington, and it was quality #1. Wish I kept it. :crying:

I don't know. I keep seeing reports about how Sig has gone to hell and Glock has gone to hell. My Glocks and Sigs continue to work great and I trust my own experience more that internet gripes. The guy on the vid was offered a full refund and refused it. Can he be satisfied ever? I don't know.

I have a fairly new 336 that was probably made in the late 90s or early 2000s. It is night and day different from the new ones I've handled at Cabela's.

The fit and finish on the new ones is quite poor. I can't speak to their function, as I haven't fired one. Based on what I can see, I wouldn't buy one.

I picked up a brand new Marlin 336 Gander Mountain special at a yard sale for $100. I think they go for what? $350-$400 at GM? I don't think the rifle had ever been fired. It isn't close to fit and finish to what Marlin put out 20 years ago. But for $100 I am happy.

I had a Marlin 336 about 20 years ago and it was great. I'm not sure about today.

Marlin, ie, Remington, ie the Freedom Group, ie Cerberus Capital Management,
are all crap! They killed Bushmaster, they killed Marlin, they are
attempting to drag down Remington.

I do own a Marlin 1894p in 44 Mag, it is outstanding, but it IS a pre Remington model.

Why I got a Mossberg 30-30.

I have 2 old Marlin 30-30s and an old Marlin .44mag, both older than me, and they are excellent guns. I also have a pre-64 (1960) Winchester '94 .30WCF that I wouldn't trade for the world. That said, I wouldn't give fifty cents for any leverguns being produced today by Marlin or Mossberg. From the few that I have shot/handled they are cheap disposable junk.

I was wanting a new Marlin but after watching the video I not sure. I will pay special attention the the fit and action when I'm looking, may look for an older one. My old Marlin I had 29 years ago was a work of art and the lever action was as smooth as glass.

Says his original SBL had an over sized chamber. Was that before Remington?

A little off subject.

I wish Henry Rifles would make a side loading gate lever action. It's ok for a tub feed on a 22lr not on anything larger. That is the only thing that keeps me from buying a Henry Big Boy rifle. I do love my Henry Golden Boy thought!!

My buddy has a HBB in .44mag, it's a nice rifle. They may not want to weaken the brass receiver by adding a gate.:dunno:

I completely understand and agree with your statement. Maybe they can produce a new model, one with a side loading gate. Because of the reputation and fine quality rifle they build I think it would sell very well. Just my pipe dream :supergrin:

Marlin relocated and has all new workers. The new plant lacked the workers that had experience and Marlin shutdown the plant for a while to sort out the issues caused by the move.

The guy seems a little off his nut, but I can see the frustration with crappy quality.

The whole video could have been done in 5 min of less instead of 18min.:whistling:

This is what's sad.

Remlin/Marlington basically put the "old guys" out to pasture, and moved the equipment to NY.
The "old guys" were given (I think) a month to train their replacements.

Sorry. . . . you CANNOT train someone in a month, to do what you've been doing for years!!
One month does NOT equal 20. . . 25 . . . 30 (or more) years or experience.



With that said, I have a PRE-Remlin/Marlington 1895G and 1895CB, and they are works of art.
Slick action. Smooth as butter.

I also have a Pre 'move' -Remlin/Marlington 1894CB (call it a transition gun) in .44 magnum, and it is smooth, but, the fit and finish are not as good as my 1895s.

Still . . . .Remlin/Marlington will never get their hands on it, again. (Unless something catastrophic happens!)

If the video guy wasn't an FFL the video could have big legal implications, with them sending him the new awful "practice" guns.

I guess it's just a sign of getting old, but dog gone it, I wish they would just leave the things that are done right alone. The list is endless. Has any product, that was bought out, ever became better? I sure can't think of any. Like many other products, glad my Marlins, and Remingtons, are vintage!

Can't comment on the remlins, but I do love the marlin actions.

Marlin wasn't perfect either, but let's hope remington can get over the "growing pains" and the pendulum swings back the other way.

No, not every Marlin was perfect. But, if it wasn't, there was a group of dedicated people who would take the rifle back, fix it, and make it perfect. They did this because they were linked to the quality of their work. They cared.

There is no such ethic as this at Cerberus. A single rifle means nothing to a twenty billion dollar corporation. And you, the customer, mean even less.

I've got a '72 model Marlin 336, and it's not going anywhere... I pulled it out of the safe last weekend to clean the barrel out, and it's still a very slick bore and the action is greasy smooth with zero slop...
