Smith 442 Durability

Mas,
A local seller has a used Smith 442 for sale in the low 300's including some ammo and a holster. This gun is supposed to have about 500 rounds through it. This is the no lock version and is about 3 years old. I know that a ton of variables go into my question, but, generally speaking, is this round count a concern on the 442? I could buy a new one for around $400 out the door. Is it just getting broken in, or would you call this well worn? I've never owned an Airweight, so I'm flying blind. Thank you, sir.

Would have helped to know 500 rounds of WHAT. 500 light mid-range wadcutters? That'll get it broken in. 500 +P+? THAT'S gonna put miles on it fast.

It's more about condition than round count. If you have a copy of my book "Gun Digest Book of Combat Handgunnery," there's a chapter on how to check out a used pistol or revolver. Or, go to www.thefiringline.com, where their revolver forum has a sticky at the top of the page titled "revolver checkout" by Jim March. It's very well done, and you can take Mr. March's advice to the bank...or in this case, to the gun shop.

best,
Mas

Mas,
I heard back from the seller. By his estimate, about 20 rounds of +P have been through it. The rest of the 500 or 600 rounds have been FMJ or regular pressure JHPs. I will check out the resources you mentioned. Thank you very much.
