Reminder about the rules... since some people just can't seem to help themselves :tongueout:

You have to choose one of the options, you cannot create another choice and you cannot reply to the thread and say you would choose neither. If you were forced to choose between these two options, what would you choose?

Here is today's question:

Would you rather...

Be completely alone with no one in the vicinity for one year?

or

Never be alone, not even for a minute, for one year?

As for me, my first instinct was to say I would rather be alone for the year. I'm a pretty introverted person; my idea of relaxing is quiet time at home. But then I got to thinking about not seeing my husband, not seeing my little boy. A whole year? I don't think I could do it.

So I guess I would choose to never be alone. But that would be pretty awful.

What would you choose?

Okay - odd question - but I have a property that is rigged with an ADT whole house monitoring system - door and window connections, motion detection, fire alarms, CO2 monitor and glass break monitors. The house was pre-wired for all of this before we took it over, and ADT installed the keypad.

Now my question is - do I have to use ADT (or another monitoring service) or are there options out there that would allow me to monitor the property myself?

What I am imagining is something that sends an alert to my phone or something. Obviously I'd need to install some sort of wireless connection.

I looked on google (probably using the wrong terms) and I can't find anything that allows me to make use of this wiring other than having ADT, ATT, Comcast, etc do the monitoring for me. What I want is a simple - no monthly fee - system that would alert me if a door/window is broken in or if there is a fire.

Having the ALARM system active - is not a priority - just having the ability to monitor the property. Does that make any sense? Is there anything out there that I can install using the current wiring setup?

"China bans Muslim headbags, burqas, and beards. Can banning Islam be far behind?"

`The notice said the government in the Dunmaili district of Yining had decided to “further implement the Party’s activities to dilute religious consciousness and advocate a civilised and healthy lifestyle.”

One of the campaign’s aims, it said, was to end the “the abnormal phenomenon” of ethnic minority women and youth wearing Arab dress, growing long beards or covering their faces in veils.

Women who had already “been transformed” would be invited to hold talks to discuss their experience, as would women who had launched successful careers.

Hou Hanmin, a Xinjiang government spokeswoman, told Reuters she was not aware of the notice, but that generally people in the region were free to wear what they wanted, including ethnic minorities. “However, for certain jobs and in education there are rules about what you cannot wear simply as a matter of convenience,” she said by telephone.

Yining, also known as Ghulja or Yili, has a population of some 515,000 people, about 46 percent of whom are Uighur, according to the 2010 census figures. It was the site of deadly riots in 1997"

But this is a strange speech he is giving. He is rambling on and on like I have never seen. It is almost like this is the best they could do to divert some attention from everything else. It is like he is having a stream of conscience moment, that is lasting for an hour and saying next to nothing. It simply isn't his style. Very damned strange.

Of course I have Google'd a bit, but basically here's why I ask.

Without going into a long drawn out story, what are the chances of contracting it from a tattooist that had it? The environment, needles, gun, inks, table all of that. But mainly asking about the tattooist himself. The shop is clean, rubber gloves are used, things are sprayed down before and after sessions, tools and tables wrapped in plastic wrap also for each session.
But what about things like sweating? Say the artist wiped his brow with the back of a glove while tattooing?

Anyone truly up to speed?

I'm looking to get one of these 2 guns and wanted to get some other opinions them.
This gun will be my home, range, carry and even backup gun for bow hunting. Currently I have a 1911 that serves all these purposes, but I'm just too worried about scratching/messing it up when in the woods. I prefer to have only 1 style of handgun and practice exclusively with it in the caliber I carry. Years ago I owned Glocks, but wondered into the 1911 camp awhile back and loved the guns. I'm back now and want that Glock reliability and workhorse readiness of this awesome pistol.
I have CCed a commander 1911 the past couple years in a MT VMII. I have no problem walking around in jeans and a tighter fitting untucked t-shirt and keeping it hidden. My wife can't even tell, unless she feels it. I'm 6' and about 210# and my big shoulders with a small waist really helps with keeping things on the belt line hidden. Things just disappear =)
I went into my LGS yesterday and compared my commander with the 21 and 30 G4 models they had on hand and to my surprise, I found the 21 is both shorter height and length wise! WHAT?!! That was completely unexpected, especially considering the barrel on the 21 is 4.6, not 4.25! When I compared the grip width, the difference was almost unnoticeable but I'm sure with calipers the 1911 would be a hair narrower. The big difference is with the slide width, which brings me to the G30S. I haven't seen one in person yet, but it appears it's got a slide width similar to my 1911, unfortunately the barrel is shorter along with the grip length/mag capacity.
So that's my experience. Now I'd like to hear which gun you guys think will meet my needs and expectations.

While on a ride-along yesterday with my brother(county deputy), he said he was on the fence on this one...

Watching the video, I'm not sure if it was a good shoot or not based on the fact that the suspect had his hands on his head for 5 seconds and was apparently complying when he was shot...

What do you guys think?
The shooting happened on the evening of November 12th, 2011. Jeffrey Flinn was driving drunk when he crashed his car. Two hunters stopped to help him and Flinn stole their truck. He then led three separate law enforcement agencies – Idaho State Police, The Lewis County Sheriff's Office, and The Nez Perce Tribal Police – on a chase.
Spike strips laid down by ISP eventually stopped the stolen car. Police dashcam video shows Flinn open the driver's side door, sit facing outward and fire one shot from a weapon at officers. Officers respond by firing more than two dozen shots at Flinn. Flinn then exits the vehicle unarmed and with his hands above his head and then, for reasons that remain unclear, officers fired several more shots, hitting Flinn, who died at the scene

Gentlefolk,

I finally got to play with my 1928 Mosin Nagant this past weekend. The 7.62x54r cartridges I used were from some sealed Russian origin probably dating back to the Crimean War.

They worked well, and it was kinda cool to hear the vacuum break when I cracked the can, but I am supposing that this ammo is using corrosive primers.

Despite intentions, I have not yet had the time to clean the Mosin. I put maybe 20 rounds through it during the firing session.

My question then is how much time do I have before the residue becomes an issue? Is this a matter of hours? In which case I am too late.

A matter of days? A matter of weeks?

I know the best practise is to clean after diring, but the best laid plans and all that, it just didn't happen...

Thx!!

Hello Mas,

Hello Mas,

As you've no doubt heard by now, there was a ghastly incident across the Pond in Britain yesterday, when 2 terrorists ran a man over (?), then got out of the car, and cut his head off in broad daylight.

Needless to say, this is getting a lot of attention over in the GNG thread. We're all chiming in with our own "what if it happened here/in front of us" scenario. So far, the general consensus is very simple: shoot the bastards on sight, and keep shooting until they are no longer a threat.

Apparently, these two terrorists just stood around with bloody knives in their hands, ranting about God knows what to a nearby bystander who was holding a camera. It took 20 minutes for the Police to respond, and when they did, they were both shot for attempting to rush/harm the officers in question. That they (the officers) did the right thing is not in doubt.

Here's what isn't so clear: Are we legal to react as such below? I don't think that there's a precedent for such a case as this.

I have made up my mind: if I came across an incident where a beheaded guy was laying in the street, and nearby were two men yelling religious extremism while holding bloody knives, and people were scampering away from them/pointing/yelling for help, etc etc, and it was QUITE CLEAR on what had just occurred...I'd shoot them both. I'd pull out my legally-carried Glock 22, and I'd shoot them both, without pre-amble. No warnings, no yellings; I'd just shoot them both. And I'd keep shooting them until they were no longer a threat. If I have to reach into my pocket for my spare mag, so be it.

So, as I mentioned above, what is your take on this? Can you give us all some perspective to think about and consider if, God Forbid, any of us should ever have to bear witness to such a horrible incident as this? Would I be wrong, in any way, for shooting these men?

I know this is a long and drawn-out scenario/question, but I really believe that, in light of this awful incident, when everybody's blood-pressure is up over it, that a clear voice of reason, logic, knowledge, wisdom, and calm such as yourself can really help us out here.

Thank you very much!

Sunday...

Well...

I know when I tell this story, there will inevitably be comments that include the words "Tin foil." That's ok, flame on.

Sunday evening, I headed out to pick up a couple things at the grocery store. Where winchester road intersects with eastern star, winchester is a fairly steep incline, and it faces east. I was sitting on that hill, with one car in front of me waiting to turn left onto winchester.

Because of the incline, you are naturally kind of looking up. The sun was behind me as I was facing east. Well, the car in front of me pulled out, and as I started to pull towards the stop sign to make my turn, I catch a glint of something very shiny and reflective in the sky off slightly to my left at what appeared to be from my vantage point, about 3000 feet in elevation, at a distance of maybe half a mile out.

So, as one would naturally do, I turned back towards it to try to see what it was. I was expecting to see an airplane, but there was no plane. In fact, there was nothing of any discernable shape. The only way I can describe it is that it looked like a piece of polished metal like one would see on the fuselage of a plane, but it kinda looked like it was sticking out "through" the sky.

The "edges" of it were not defined, and in fact, appeared to sort of change and undulate as this thing moved slowly from north to south. It may sound odd, but the first thing I thought of was something off of star trek in the realm of cloaking technology.

I watched it for probably thirty seconds, and finally, whatever it was started "cloaking" (sorry, thats the only way I know to describe it) from it's south end towards it's north end, like it was covering itself with the blue of the sky around it, until finally it disappeared.

I have puzzled over this for several days, and can come up with no logical or natural explanation for what I saw.

I guess I am a believer in ufo's having had a very strange experience when I was a child. But i also believe that the skunk works are always going at full steam where defense tech is concerned, and consider it entirely possible it could have been a piece of military technology as well.

Anyone else ever seen or experienced anything similar?

Mas,

A comment I have heard repeatedly when someone defends the carry of a mouse gun (full disclosure - I often carry an LCP) is, "If the BG is more than a few feet away, I am going to run. not fight."

I have given it some though and decided it makes sense, in a narrow set of situations. Not a good idea if you are not alone, etc.

My reasoning:

1 - From what little I have read people miss a lot and it gets much worse when your target is in motion.

2 - While it may be legal to defend onself with deadly force, I have read quite often that the financial and emotional stress of defending such an action is enormous. Running away avoids this.

My concerns are:

1 - There is a time when you will have to fight. Do you think the pause to evaluate may be fatal?

2 - Well, really do not want to get shot in the back.

So, what do you think? Is running a viable option in certain situations? Is it another option we should keep in mind? Or will a focus on this degrade a fight reponse or slow reactions?

Thanks,
Rico

In Hancock, NY an Islamic community that sits on 80 acres of land has decided to form its own government. They call their community: The Town of Islamberg. They have their own mayor, deputy mayor and five town council members. None of them are elected, of course.

They even boast that their “town” provides departments of education, medical, finance and land development services.

This Islamic compound has truly become a city-state. Though not recognized as a legitimate township by the City of Hancock, this Islamic community nevertheless enforces its own laws on the “citizens” within its borders. They do so by using the iron fist of Sharia law.

They are on our soil:steamed: are we stupid or not:wow::steamed:

newer reloader; crimp and primer Qs with Lee turret

Newer to reloading and wondering if anyone can comment on a few items.

I'm loading 9mm using 115gr FMJ from Precision Delta and 115gr plated from Berrys with CCI SP primers and WSF Powder.

I've loaded long at 1.16 because the published data shows the min / max at 1.169.

I've loaded some different batches - target the min powder at 4.9gr and upped to target 5.1.

They've done ok but in my process I've encountered a few things I'm questioning.

I suppose my questions more related to the Lee Classic 4-hole Turret & carbide die performance.

1) Powder level - I use the Lee autodisk and tried suggested 40 for the min 4,9gr load. The 40 disk gives between 4.7 and 5.0 - mostly low. So I upped to the 43 and get 4.9 to 5.2 - mostly high. Measures verified on the Lee scale as well as a GemPro verified with check weights and accuracy to 0.05 gr. I expected more consistency than a 0.3 range. Any comments? Doesn't seem concerning to be in the 4.7 to 5.2 range.

2) I have the Lee FCD and adjusted per instructions - install die snug to shell plate, then with bullet in shell turn top in until it stops. Back out bullet and turn in top 1/2 turn. I feel some binding coming out of this die and it leaves a "knick" or "deep scratch" in the side of the brass. I have disassembled and cleaned the die and tried backing off the crimp which helped but didn't eliminate the knicks. If I back it off by more than 1/4 a turn then it doesn't crimp enough as I can push the bullet in easily. Even if I back off a full turn, I still get binding and brass knicks. The binding isn't significant effort but the knicks are deep. Any ideas?

3) That leads me to ....can anyone suggest some good good crimp / bad crimp pics? Due to the knicking and such, I'd like more visual verification of good/bad crimp.

4) What's the danger of good/bad crimps? If die adjusted per instructions am I too focused on the crimp?

5) Lee Safety Primer - I am 100% certain my primers are in the container correctly. I've even just put in 10 primers at a time so I could check, recheck and recheck again they were all facing correctly.... yet I when I actuate the priming operation I get about 1 in 10 primers upside down. Really annoying.

6) Lastly, when down to the last handful of primers in the safety prime I can't get the mechanism to drop the primer. I have to load more primers - I expect because the weight pushes them more into the mechanism. Anything I can do though? It's annoying to have to add primers to finish off the last handful of rounds and then put the unused ones back in mfg case. Also, if I'm loading a small batch of 10, I have to load 25+ primers just so my 10 come out of the actuator.

Sorry for the length appreciate any input.

 SLR-106 SERIES NEWS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MAY 17th, 2013
PRODUCTION ENDING ON POPULAR SLR-106 SERIES
(LAS VEGAS) – After nearly a decade since its initial introduction into the firearms marketplace, the SLR-106 series is getting a change in to “Collector’s Item.” Production on the series officially ended......A comprehensive audit of the current offerings in the firearms industry, recent trends and near-future shifts with regard to technology and advancement all factored into the decision to discontinue the series. Arsenal’s obligations with military and government contracts, production for the movie industry and commitments to distributors and dealers also shaped this decision. The current stock of SLR-106 5.56 caliber rifles and pistols will continue to be sold until supply runs out. Arsenal’s availability list is displayed below. Additional SLR-106 products can be found by checking with Arsenal’s distributors and various dealers nationwide.
