460 rowland ammo testing

Awhile back I converted my G21 to 460rowland (yes it's ported, I apparently like abuse :crying: )...

Image:...

Awhile back I converted my G21 to 460rowland (yes it's ported, I apparently like abuse :crying: )...

If you spend much time on the Internet researching 460rowland, you'll find reports of various problems with this setup including FTE with 45acp (some recoil springs appear to be too stiff) and FTF heavier 460rowland rounds without double magazine springs. Rather than being discouraged, I actually like the chance to test and fine tune my build to find the perfect setup.

Since a lot of the users in the reports are using different guns with different kits or custom work...I decided to start testing as many different kinds of ammo I can get my hands on in my own G21 gen4 460rowland.com conversion. Maybe it's just a strong desire to shoot the thing...a lot...after waiting three months for it to arrive.

While I try to be as "scientific" as possible, this is in no way complete. I need to do a lot more shooting to draw real conclusions, but wanted to start sharing my findings to date in case they're useful to other shooters. My hope is others will add their own findings, and we can all learn from one another, dispel some myths, and zero in on the optimal 460 round.

To get us started, here are the contenders for this post:

For each of the 460rowland loads I started by firing a number of rounds through a "regular" G21 gen4 magazine and compared performance to the same magazine with an extra spring (two standard 10-coil G21 springs mated together as suggested around various forums).

I also fired 45acp and 45acp +P to ensure reliable cycling of the slide with the stiffer recoil spring. To be complete, I added some 45super from Buffalo Bore to the mix just to ensure it worked reliably (though I didn't have doubts in this regard).

The good news is, despite several reports to the contrary, I was able to successfully shoot 45acp (even standard pressure) through my G21 conversion with the stiffer recoil spring -- no problems! From what I understand, this would no longer be the case if I went with the sprinco (don't take my word for it, email them and ask)...though it would make the gun easier to shoot for longer periods of time (thinking of doing this).

In 45acp I've shot 100 rounds of Federal Hydra-Shok 230gr, 100 rounds Federal HST 230gr +P and 100 rounds of Corbom 185gr +P with no FTE or FTF problems. This was of course out of the standard Glock magazine (no extra spring since it's just 45acp and feeds as expected).

Next up was 45super with the standard single-spring magazine. 100 rounds each of Buffalo Bore in 185gr and 230gr. No FTE or FTF from 185gr, 1 FTF from the 230gr. Not sure if this is an anamoly (still breaking in the barrel) or the heavier bullet needing the double mag spring. Had the FTF about 20 rounds in, switched to double spring magazine and shot all remaining rounds with no problems.

I then shot several boxes of 460rowland, again starting with the single-spring magazine. 60 rounds each of Buffalo Bore (185gr @ 1500fps), Wilson Combat (200gr Hornady XTP @ 1340fps) and Corbon (230gr @ 1250fps). The Buffalo Bore and WC/Hornady ran flawlessly. The Corbon had two FTF within 10 rounds. Switched to the double-spring magazine and ran until empty with no problems.

Overall this seems to show good performance from the conversion with either 45acp (standard or high pressure loads), 45super and 460rowland in all common bullet weights. That said, it does seem like heavier bullets really need the extra mag spring.

Again, to be sure I really need to make a few more trips to the range and run more rounds of each through the kit...So far, it seems like 200gr is a sweet spot. The WC/Hornady rounds are easier to shoot (not as hot as the Buffalo Bore) and feed consistently in my 13rd G21 mags.

FWIW, all behaved similarly at 7-20yds in terms of POA/POI. They are as accurate as the shooter. :whistling:

What have you all been shooting?

A friend's new laptop came with that OS and apparently, its email client limits which servers it will communicate with. Her email service is not on the list.

Is that true? If someone has an IMAP account at xyz.com is there a way to configure Windows 8 email for that server?

She's looking for a client that can import a M.S. Outlook .pst file.

I'm not into Windows. I'm suspecting PST is a proprietary format that other clients can't import.

She tried Thunderbird since it's free, but that client has no support for PST importing.

Perhaps, she needs to buy Outlook for the new laptop.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Anyone ever heard of this woman? Sibel Edmonds?

She is a former FBI translator who is making some pretty heavy claims about the CIA and their involvment with terrorist groups, including al qaeda, right up until 9/11 happened.

I had heard the name before, and one of my friends posted this on his facebook page.

http://ceasefiremagazine.co.uk/whist...ief-u-s-asset/

Here is an excerpt.

A whistleblower has revealed extraordinary information on the U.S. government’s support for international terrorist networks and organised crime. The government has denied the allegations yet gone to extraordinary lengths to silence her. Her critics have derided her as a fabulist and fabricator. But now comes word that some of her most serious allegations were confirmed by a major European newspaper only to be squashed at the request of the U.S. government.

In a recent book Classified Woman, Sibel Edmonds, a former translator for the FBI, describes how the Pentagon, CIA and State Department maintained intimate ties to al-Qaeda militants as late as 2001. Her memoir, Classified Woman: The Sibel Edmonds Story, published last year, charged senior government officials with negligence, corruption and collaboration with al Qaeda in illegal arms smuggling and drugs trafficking in Central Asia.

In interviews with this author in early March, Edmonds claimed that Ayman al-Zawahiri, current head of al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden’s deputy at the time, had innumerable, regular meetings at the U.S. embassy in Baku, Azerbaijan, with U.S. military and intelligence officials between 1997 and 2001, as part of an operation known as ‘Gladio B’. Al-Zawahiri, she charged, as well as various members of the bin Laden family and other mujahideen, were transported on NATO planes to various parts of Central Asia and the Balkans to participate in Pentagon-backed destabilisation operations.

According to two Sunday Times journalists speaking on condition of anonymity, this and related revelations had been confirmed by senior Pentagon and MI6 officials as part of a four-part investigative series that were supposed to run in 2008. The Sunday Times journalists described how the story was inexplicably dropped under the pressure of undisclosed “interest groups”, which, they suggest, were associated with the U.S. State Department.

I spent most of the movie wondering what they blackmailed Brad Pitt with to get him on board, but then I saw in the credits that he co-produced it. Maybe it was a class project at the Tarantino Wannabee Fantasy Film-maker Camp.

I can usually walk away from even a really bad movie with some little something I found in it that I liked. This film simply had no redeeming qualities.

The purpose of this thread is trying to find a new, lightweight and more comfortable carry option for my S&W 642's.

I've done pocket carry awhile with a Desantis Superfly, but it doesn't work well in shorts with small front pockets. The draw is less than optimal. As a BUG in the support side pocket it's okay, but not great for a main gun.

I've tried the belly band. Don't like it. Although I have a slender build it feels too awkward.

Have a Desantis Die Hard ankle holster. Too inaccessible in most situations (except seated) and not even doable when wearing shorts. I only use this for deep concealment.

Tried OWB holsters, don't like the retention straps on them, or the fact that my shirt can ride up when reaching and expose the bottom of the holster.

I want to carry AIWB, or IWB strong side at about 3:30. I have a couple M-tacs for my Glocks and HK's but don't want to make a small lightweight revolver huge by way of using a large holster. In addition, all that added holster material is going to, due to the cylinder, make it thicker than a Glock when carried IWB.

Thoughts and input appreciated. Share what you use for your snubby. :)

I'm getting this strong urge to go pick one out from NCSHP's surplus inventory as a personal vehicle. Most of their Tahoes are used for commercial vehicle enforcement. Were these model years pretty reliable, or shop queens like the early Chargers? It's either this or a newer F-150, and I'm tempted to keep it simple.

I've had this model on my list for years and finally found the right one. The M40 is the military version of the Lahti L-35. They were built in Sweden starting in 1940 and continuing for a decade or so.

Its a very interesting pistol and I love interesting, unusual pistols.

I should have it next week and will get pics up as soon as possible.

Anybody have one? :dunno:

I'm getting towards the end of my collection list now. I still need a Korriphila HSP, Browning BDM, Ballister Molina, and a couple very select others, one being the Walther P88 Competition I have on layaway.

I can't wait to finally say I'm done. :)

Hello-all. I went to our local gun show today in Asheville,NC. It was not crowded like when we had the panic buying, so was a little nicer milling about. I was pleasantly surprised that the prices did not seem to be that bad. If you needed mags or ammo, there was plenty.
I picked up some .223 for $8 a box, no not the best deal, but better than i expected. They had more rifles and polymier pistols and supplies than any thing else. More tarues and lots of sig's. 1911's they had several Remingtons, Springfield range gun, a Sig zombie, and a couple of Colts at a fair askin price. Over all did not see much gun buying though, i picked up some ammo and a military wood ammo box. Nice day though even with the crappy weather.

You're a sick senior citizen and the government says there is no nursing home care available for you. So what do you do?
Our plan gives anyone 65 years, or older, a gun (G) and 4 bullets. You are allowed to shoot four Politicians.

Of course, this means you'll be sent to prison, where you will receive three meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating and air conditioning, cable TV, and all the health care you need.

Need new teeth? No problem. Need glasses? That's great.
Need a new hip, knees, kidney, lungs or heart? They're all covered.

As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you at least as often as they do now.

And who will be paying for all of this? The same
government that just told you they can't afford for you to go into a home.

And, you can get rid of 4 useless politicians while you're at it.

Plus, because you are a prisoner, you don't have to pay any income taxes anymore.

Is this a great country or what?

Overview:

The Bravo Concealment DOS (Drop Out of Sight) Holster is a well constructed kydex IWB holster. The specific holster I reviewed was made for my Glock 23 gen 3. The holster has the option of being shipped with either soft belt loops or kydex J-hooks. On my holster I opted for the kydex J-hooks.

Construction:

Bravo concealment uses a strong .06 inch thick kydex that is textured on the outside and smooth on the inside. The holster is made of two kydex half shells that are attached at four different points. The soft belt loops or J-hooks are attached to the holster using the same four points. The overall construction of the holster is outstanding, the materials and craftsmanship is excellent.

The DOS holster fits my Glock 23 perfectly. Right out of the box the holster fit my gun like a glove. The retention is excellent, the gun does not fall out of the holster when shaken up-side down even with the weight of a fully loaded magazine in the gun. Also, the holster is quite, it does not click, rattle or squeak.

Comfort:

When I first tried on my DOS Holster I was not impressed with the comfort of the product. I carry at about the 4:00 position. Over about a week, I was able to work with the holster and figure out how it most comfortably carries for me. Surprisingly I found that using a rigid belt was the primary source of discomfort. I normally wear a very rigid belt that with other holsters improves comfort however I discovered that using a more flexible belt greatly increased the comfort with my DOS holster. Since using the holster with a flexible belt, I have been much happier and I decided not to send the holster back.

Drawing and re-holstering from the holster is fast and smooth. The holster stays open under the pressure of the belt allowing for one-handed re-holstering. I find that the .06 inch thick kydex is thin enough to keep the package small but strong enough to keep the holster open.

One complaint I do have is that on the inside of the holster there is a small protrusion of kydex about an inch from the slide stop lever (see pictured). This protrusion digs into my side and becomes irritating. I have found that with a tucked in undershirt the irritation is less but still noticeable. This problem is easily solvable with a dremel tool or file and sandpaper.

Concealability:

I am on the skinny side at 5’9” and 140lbs and the bravo concealment holster conceals my mid-sized Glock 23 without any issues. I can wear shorts and a T-shirt and the gun is concealed. The holster holds the gun tight to my body while allowing me a full grip on the gun.

Improvments:

One improvement that I think Bravo Concealment could add to the holster would be adjustable cant angle and ride depth. I do find the ride depth comfortable but the option to change it would be an appealing feature to many people. I would however like to be able to adjust the holster to have a slight forward cant.

Overall:

I would recommend this holster to those looking for an all kydex IWB holster. However, at $70 and a 10 – 12 week wait, I do not plan to order another DOS holster. If the mentioned improvements were made without a price increase than I would consider another DOS holster but until then I would rather save the money and wait and try other manufactures such as Alabama Holster Company or PJ Holsters.

I sometimes need to do some specialized soldering away from a power outlet, on heavier wire connections (10-gauge or sometimes a little larger).

There are a number of small, more-or-less pocket-size torches available now that use small butane cylinders sold in drug and department stores for refillable cigarette lighters.

All of these torches I've tried are cheap and flimsy..
Anyone know of a quality unit, more of a pro-grade tool?

I'm not looking for a typical butane soldering iron, unless it's a heavy-duty tool.. Not a pencil-type soldering iron..

An open-flame torch will do, if it's a small pinpoint flame.

Then, the next day May 9th (Thursday), Lois Lerner (IRS) asked a reporter to ask a certain question at a May 10th (Friday) news conference to start the first defensive back-burning scandal to rob the Benghazi scandal of its oxygen.

But, that wasn't deemed to be enough to get Benghazi off the front page, so a second back-fire was started by the Justice Dept. The Associated Press received a letter from the DoJ on May 10th (Friday) detailing the seizure of AP phone records.

The truth is plain to see. Obama fears further media attention focused on Benghazi hearings and what remains to be uncovered. He fears this so much that he used TWO back-burning scandals to take the media's focus off of the Benghazi testimony of the whistle-blowers. Clearly, Obama feels that his very presidency is threatened. So, what is there yet to uncover? We shall see.

I went to the gun show today looking for some 7.62x39 ammo. Found it and a good deal on a S&W M&P MOE 5.56 that I could not walk away from. Well I might have walked away from it, but after my brother bought it ( they had 2 ) . I went back after I had looked at everything to buy the other one, but it was gone. Their was another dealer there that had one at the same price so I bought it, along with a couple of pmags and 1000 rds. of ammo.

I might have to that a break from these forums and gun shows for awhile. I found out last night my roof is leaking.

I have read that people have sent their Gen 2/3 Glocks back to Glock to either have the frame upgrade from Gen 2 to Gen 3 for the addition of a light rail or because they messed up their frame due to a poor stippling job. So my questions in regards to that is, could I send a Gen 2 Glock in and have Glock upgrade it to a Gen 4 for a fee instead of just upgrading it to a Gen 3 frame? The only reason I could see this not being possible is the fact that the slides and frames do not work going from Gen 2/3 to Gen 4 thus Glock would have to replace the entire firearm..

I live in Illinois and we are about to get concealed carry. Finally!!! Assuming Chicago doesn't ruin that for the rest of the state. My debate is this. I like 9mm. I love .45 I have a glock 19 gen4 and a 21 gen 4. I want to know if I am better off with a 26 gen4, a 30 gen 4 or a 30s to carry. I would appreciate all info from you guys. You are all great. Thank you in advance.

Hey all...

So, my kid and his girlfriend, who both go to RIT, are stuck in town with no place to stay. The kid they were supposed to stay with til their flight leaves on monday had their family show up for a surprise visit, so his accomodations fell apart.

He tells me he may be able to find someone else to stay with, but it's still up in the air, and because it is graduation weekend, every hotel around is full.

Just curious if anyone has any ideas or might be willing to help.

So with the 30 day countdown started, I just registered for the event.

Not quite sure what or how or if the new laws in NJ may effect our travels. We have quite a few new competitors coming with us this season but none to Jackson as they are afraid of traveling into NJ

I look foward to seeing the Jersey glockers and the rest of the people.

I sure hope I remember how to do this

Hey all,

I don't have a Blue Book handy so if you wouldn't mind and have the spare time, could you look this up for me and give me an idea as to the worth of this pistol my buddy found in a run down country store out in the sticks?

It's either a S&W Model 1 in 22 rimfire or a S&W Model 2 in 32 rimfire. He's getting his pics to send them to me to try and see exactly what it is.

Assume it is in probably 80%.

Thanks for the help and your time

I'm running ubuntu 12.04 lts on an older dell 530 desktop pc E4500 core 2 duo. I recently saved an image of the PC and verified that I can restore the computer to the current state / settings. The computer is acting up and I'm afraid that it's hardware releated. I happen to have another dell 530 that has a wiped drive, only difference is that the processor is an E4600. I used Clonezilla to make the image and was wondering if I can just restore the image to the other computer? Or will that not work?

Thanks for any info!
