A few weeks ago, President Obama advised graduates at Ohio State University that they need not listen to voices warning about tyranny around the corner, because we have self-government in America. He argued that self-government is in and of itself an adequate safeguard against tyranny, because voters can be counted upon to elect democrats (lowercase “d”) not tyrants. His argument defies logic and 20th-century history. It reveals an ignorance of the tyranny of the majority, which believes it can write any law, regulate any behavior, alter any procedure and tax any event so long as it can get away with it. History has shown that the majority will not permit any higher law or logic or value -- like fidelity to the natural law, a belief in the primacy of the individual or an acceptance of the supremacy of the Constitution -- that prevents it from doing as it wishes.

The FBI recently arrested a San Antonio man on charges that he lied to gain entry into the U.S. and then attempted to obtain a sensitive position at the Department of Defense. The man, identified as Wissam Allouce, 44, appeared in court for an initial hearing on Friday afternoon, the San Antonio Express-News reports. He supposedly shook his head as U.S. Magistrate Judge Henry Bemporad read the charges against him in a federal indictment. The judge ordered Allouche be held pending a bail hearing and his arraignment, which is scheduled for Tuesday. FBI special agent Erik Vasys said the man “allegedly tried to cover up his affiliation with Hezbollah.” “It is believed he was looking to secure a sensitive position with the U.S. government at some point,” he added.

Americans are beginning to recognize the disturbing similarities between President Obama and the fallen Richard Nixon, but the comparison that may matter more is between Mr. Obama and King George III. “He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance,” in the words of the Declaration of Independence. King George’s assault on the Americans’ natural freedoms was oppressive, intolerable and deserving of a revolution. The truth is, the intrusion, restriction and outright harassment that our government subjects us to today is far beyond what the colonists faced from their tyrannical king. If it was tyranny in 1776, then, by God, it is tyranny today.

Barack Obama’s close friend and major fundraiser, Penny Pritzker, who has been nominated to be the new Secretary of Commerce, didn’t include more than $80 million in income in financial disclosures she filed last week. Pritzker, who is a billionaire, supposedly “inadvertently omitted” this tiny part of her fortune. Her lawyer, Robert Rizzi, wrote the Commerce Department on May 21 that the money was not included in the May 15 filings that were reviewed by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics “because of a clerical error and through no fault of Ms. Pritzker.”

Over the course of his epistle, Obama repeatedly defended Islam as he has done so frequently in the past. In the process, the president continued to demonstrate his lack of understanding of global terrorism by reminding us that we must contain Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood and other terrorist organizations throughout the world. As the president sees it, these groups are the enemy. He is wrong. It is not just a group or two. Islam is the enemy. Not radical Islam, but Islam itself. Does it really matter whether the London killer was Al-Qaeda, Taliban, Hamas, Hezbollah or Muslim Brotherhood? As Hillary Clinton might ask, “What difference does it make?” What matters is that the perpetrator(s) arbitrarily beheaded another human being in broad daylight in the streets of a major international city in the name of Islam. What other religion in the world does such horrendous acts in the name of its faith? Name one. In most societies what happened in London earlier this week would be outright murder. Not in the world of Islam.

There were times this past week when it seemed like the 19th-century Know-Nothing Party had returned to Washington. President Obama insisted he knew nothing about major decisions in the State Department, or the Justice Department, or the Internal Revenue Service. The heads of those agencies, in turn, insisted they knew nothing about major decisions by their subordinates. It was as if the government functioned by some hidden hand. Clearly, there was a degree of willful blindness in these claims. However, the suggestion that someone, even the president, is in control of today’s government may be an illusion. The growing dominance of the federal government over the states has obscured more fundamental changes within the federal government itself: It is not just bigger, it is dangerously off kilter. Our carefully constructed system of checks and balances is being negated by the rise of a fourth branch, an administrative state of sprawling departments and agencies that govern with increasing autonomy and decreasing transparency.
