I wanted something awesome to celebrate my degree with. Something cool and fun that I could look at and would remind me of graduating, of getting off my ass and finishing something, that could serve as a milestone marker not only of finishing up at NKU, but of our move to Texas.

Looking at a map of aforementioned Texas, finding the little dot marked "Cleburne" and the non-dot where I knew Stephenville to be -- Stephenville housing Tarleton State University -- I decided...

On History: Oh no, "revisionist history!"

Posted 12-04-2010 at 05:14 by Critias

Reading over a recent Civil War thread (or rather, a recent Civil War thread masquerading as an Abe Lincoln thread), I couldn't help but notice how quick both sides were to throw out the "revisionist history" card after a quote. A few GTers do so as eagerly and gleefully as if they were plucking off a glove and slapping someone in the face with it, spitting out the words like they were the most grievous and dismissive insult they could imagine.

Folks, history is supposed...

On Geekery, Part Two: Wargaming...sport of geek-kings?

Posted 12-02-2010 at 12:45 by Critias

On the bright side, wargaming doesn't have all the scandal and controversy and emotional baggage that RPGs do. There's something that certain groups just love about the escapism element of RPGs, about the idea that you're "becoming" someone else, and that they love to point the finger at. They'll conveniently ignore that every good movie or fantastic novel out there is popular precisely because of that same element of escapism, of a writer or actor putting you into another character's...

So I've hinted -- not very subtly, mind you -- at being a geek in previous posts. I'm sure plenty of you have been busily googling the word, scouring the internet for more information on precisely what this "geekdom" might entail and how it is I've snuck onto Glocktalk to infect the place.

Before we go any further, lemme point out that to my other on-line friends, I'm the weirdo hardcore gun guy. I'm the shooter, the guy who does Kali and Jeet, the dude who's spending...

On Freelancing, or "How I Became a Mercenary Writer"

Posted 11-28-2010 at 13:21 by Critias
Updated 11-28-2010 at 13:24 by Critias

Now, maybe it's not glamorized by the media and the gun rags as much as being a high speed, low drag, private military company contractor...but there's quite the life of glory and adventure to be led by their deskbound, completely non-violent, mercenary brethren; the freelance writer!

Sure, sure, we don't get to play with guns, or ride in helicopters, or play with guns while riding in helicopters, but we do okay for ourselves. I mean, three and a half cents a word is nothing...
