June-August 1978, MCRD Parris Island, SC., 1st Btn. (platoon 1024, if I recall). SSgt Myrick was the SDI and Sgt. Alwin and Sgt. Venenziano were the DIs. I can remember the day of Graduation after the ceremony. We were in the squadbay and my father (retired Marine and former DI) was talking to the SDI. The SDI called me over and asked me why I never told him my father was a Drill Instructor. I replied, Sir, the Private did not think it was such a good idea Sir. He said, You were right. We all had a good chuckle.

That reminds me: Stevie Ray Vaughn died while I was at Parris Island. Our DI mentioned it to us, and made us dig in honor of Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Or was that the time he stuffed most of us in a broom closet?

The badges shown are competition badges, not qualification/requalification badges.

DD_USMC
10-13-2007, 21:53
The standard qualification badges have not changed.

My displayed awards are medals (not referred to as badges) that I earned during rifle and pistol competitions. Some were earned during Division Matches and some earned at the Nationals or Regional Matches.

It takes 30 points to earn Distinguished and only the top 10% receive awards. 10 points for a gold, 8 points for a silver, and 6 for a bronze medal. You can only fire a maximum of 4 matches per year. Once you earn Distinguished (Rifle or Pistol) you are exempt from ever qualifying again. (Rifle or Pistol).

Marine Corps recruit training at Fort Bragg? And you don't remember your platoon number?

------------------

Two things:

1. I drifted over here because at the time of this post
this weekend is the USMC birthday. Having a "Full Metal
Jacket" moment:) Wanted to see what my fellow USMC
patriots were talking about.

2. I was bored and nothin catched me on the Internet.

Then I spotted THIS.

Being a former Paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne Division, stationed
at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Never once did I see a USMC recruiting nor
training posts.

Force Recon, Navy SEALS, Australian S.A.S. yes. I saw those guys
because Fort Bragg is massive. Something like 10 miles wide and
30 miles long. Filled with firing ranges, drop zones for partroopers
and traing centers for SOCOM, the Green Berets and Delta Force.
Is it fair to say that the USMC may from time-to-time utilize this
U.S. Government asset? Yes.

Back to the question;

How many Unitd States Army recruiting posts/training centers do the Marines have? Anywhere? doesnt make sense. Doesnt add up.

So the burden of proof lays apon the shoulders of the individual who posted this stuff. We need further explanation in order to believe what appears to be a highly "suspect" post.

With those scant details you leave your audiance "wanting" if not cynical.

So "Briarpatch", since this is your post. Please explain?

What does your DD-214 say abour your service

Those are the dates I was stationed at MCRD SD, worked for the property control office, supply. Although I was there much longer then that, ugh. Stationed there that is.

JDI SSgt Latimer

DI SSgt Reid

I remember looking across the squadbay at the airport at night then looking out my porthole across the parade deck wondering WTF was over there. For being in San Diego I was always freezing my buttocks off. Later on I was stationed there, the base still sucked but I got to see a different side of being a Drill Instructor. When they would arrive fresh from the fleet and go through DI school they were always hardcore and would give you crap constantly. After a year of being a DI they would come down to my warehouse begging for campaign cover hookups since they could never get a letter from their CO to get one then they would sleep in the OP cage (Where we kept all of the issue gear that went to DI's... Campaign covers, short and long sleeve khaki shirts, cammies, swords, pt shirts, belts, buckles, EGA's for cover, and thats about all they get). These Marines always remained hard in front of their recruits but I got to see a different side of them so it was a great experience for me. When one of my own DI's, SSgt Berold, was checking out of the depot, he came to me and thanked me for everything I had done for him since I had been stationed there. He then ripped the nametag off of his cammies and handed it to me and left. (Of course he didn't walk out in those same cammies!) That was a huge moment for me because he was the Drill Instructor who beat my squad through the Crucible and then on top of the Reaper he gave me my Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. I respected him more than any other DI I had, not just because he punched me in my throat for coming up behind him too fast, or because him saying "you piece of ****" with his Australian accent made me laught inside, but he was hard, and twice I stood face to face with him where he first told me I would make an awesome f-ing marine, then he later thanked me for the things I had done for him, and both times he gave me something that brought a sense of pride over me. These are the moments I will never forget. Happy Belated Birthday Marines and Happy Veterans Day.

Ooh-Rah Marine Corps, (clap, clap) KILL!

That's awesome.

I remember one of my juniors SSgt Davis, mean bastard, never lost his cool but was the toughest of all of them. He was a prick all the way through boot, until final PFT.

I had a strange knee injury about that time, just going through COD on the parade deck one day and it felt like I was shot in the knee, had a tough time for a few weeks with it, no idea what the problem was. Anyway, my Senior pulled me into the duty hut and told me he needed me to pull through for PFT and to suck it up so we could make Honor Platoon since I was a high PFTer at 290.

No problem, I can run with the pain, I thought. During the run I did quite well, but was feeling the sharp pains during the last mile. Then, the meanest bastard on base ran up next to me, told me "pass that mother f*$ker" as he sped up to pass another recruit. Then he whispered "you and me boy, we're gonna finish this bi#$ch together" He was with me, and wasn't going to let me fall out, no matter what the pain. That was all I needed to bust into full sprint to finish the last mile, his running with me showed the most respect I have ever seen, or had for anyone. Coolest moment of boot. After we crossed the finish line, he disappeared, but gave me some grief after graduation about it as we laughed (uncomfortably as a new Marine, you know since you hated these guys for three months, now they joke a bit with you, it's odd)

Happy Veterans Day

Wow. Yeah, good times. :) Ya know, I wish I wasn't 40 years old and I could get back in sometimes. I miss active duty some times.

I still stay in touch with several of the guys I served with. One of my Marine buddies came to my wedding this summer. We see each other once a year or so. He just got married 2 years ago and I made the trip to his wedding too.

I wouldn't call it impressive as much as working hard and being in the right place at the right time. I spent my first three years in a high speed unit and when I got back from Beruit the Career Planner "advised" me to go ahead and go to the Drill Field. I had just turned 21 and was still green but had alot of good NCO/SNCO's who took the time to work with me to get me locked on.

Ran into three of my Instructors once I got off the Island. My Senior SSgt Havery, which was the most likeable, said he felt like he was paroled once he finally left.

Sgt Barry, our heavy, saw me and recognized me right off and told me he hated recruits but loved his fellow Marines…

How many doing rifle manual with their footlockers or mattresses?

Funny Story... I was considered early chow ( were myself and fellow recruit would go to chow 20mins ahead to be able to watch the gear while others were at chow themselves. While in the squad bay Sgt Barry was showing a new Drill Instructor around and how things work.. The new Sgt whom I didn't recall at this time asked where I was from.

I sounded off Havelock, NC. He asked me was my father a Marine also. I reported "Yes Sir". He began to smile to Himself and asked if my father was the same Gunny Moody with 3rd L.A.A.M on Cherry Point. At that point I could do nothing but want to hide. He told me that my father trained him at his job and he was greatful, but on a side note my father used to give him hell. He told me that when he need a volunteer recuit that he was going to call on me by name.

Over all I loved my time on the Island...

One opportunity I had that is not often experienced, is having my Drill Instructors report to me later in my career. I had the honor of working with my SDI (a superb Marine) 8 years after Bootcamp, when I was a Warrant Officer and he was a First Sergeant and I had another of my Drill Instructors (another superb Marine) report to me 14 years after Bootcamp when I was his Commanding Officer. My SDI and I were reunited again some 30 plus years after Bootcamp when we both attended some official functions on behalf of HQMC (He a SgtMaj and me a Colonel). Some outstanding reunions.

MCRD PI platoon 2087, Graduated October 30, 1986. My series was the last one to go through the wooden receiving building. Also, someone said the Marine at the airport was stressing the recruits. My experience at the airport was just getting into a loose mob, a name check and then the bus ride. Things got different on the footprints though.

Oh man, that guy in the SD Airport, so funny. He looked like your normal Marine, but welcoming and cool, until our appointed lead guy introduced us as the incoming batch of new recruits fresh off the airplane, asking where we catch the bus to MCRD. The dude's eyes went crazy and he unloaded on us right there in front of everyone, we sat there indian style for at least an hour, legs all asleep, no talking, with him barking over us.

Then after we got on that bus, some crazy Corporal with tourettes or something took us in to MCRD, he was shifting around, shaking his head, swearing and just about rolling the bus on the turns, talk about a wake up call a comin.

Good times, good times.
